Since beginning of time?

All of the questions I answer so far on this topic are warning you against what will happen if you follow the other posters on modern medicine or formula or parenting and they think of me I'm milant or a lunatic which I'm not. I feel that getting pregnant or pregnant or birth or feeding your baby or parenting your baby should be done the way it always has before modern times. Pretty much been for this.

Thank you, again.

In Canada, think all of Europe, New Zealand as well, but not sure if they do. Are pretty much not for what USA is, but not for breastfeeding or parenting, as I know of.

Which I can worst answer to this question as well so you all can see why it is bad as well. I can't, please add the worst answer button as well so everyone can see the other side of it as well.

Thank you, again.

I think part of the problem is that we no longer have the experience of parenting that previous generations had with an extended family around them. Even 50 years ago, peopel tended to live much closer to their relations, so there were older aunts and mothers who could pass on their experience.

Now, we have to learn it from scratch everytime, so pay more attention to the "experts" (and advertisers) and with more mothers now going out to work, convenience plays a greater part than it has before. Now, we pop in to the supermarket, rather than visiting a dozen or so different shops. It's a change in style.

Your question and comment seems so vague. Just say what you want to say. I breastfed my daughter until she was 17 months. I was never ashamed of my breasts and she continues to see them. I did use a nursing shawl when out in public about 80 percent of the time. She is now 19 months old. I am grateful for modern medicine because I know my daughter has all her vaccinations and won't die from an illness that once killed people. I also had an epidural and am grateful for that. I am open to the new and old ways and pick and choose what fits me and my family best.

lots of people followed gurus like Dr. Spock with regard to child rearing: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/forum/march98/spock.html

this website: http://www.007b.com/breast_taboo.php
says :In North America and in many other westernized countries woman's breasts are a taboo: they are supposed to be hidden. Exposing woman's breasts in public is considered shameful and inappropriate ("indecent exposure") even on beaches or while breastfeeding. In other words, breasts - or at least the nipple - are supposed to be covered at all times.

Parents tend to teach their children the same way, and many times children don't see a single naturally nude breast (apart from their own) while growing up. It is totally possible that a child grows up in North America and never sees a baby breastfeeding!

the above is what I was taught.

I think our infants evolved to need human milk on demand, mommy's arms on demand for years after birth, and lots of reciperocal conversations. I think we need to approximate what we see gorillas and chimps in the zoo doing with their infants.

Can you just see a gorilla mom - or cave mom - put her baby to sleep in alone one part of the cave and go sleep in another part? Impossible. And the stress hormones that flood a baby's brain today when mommy leaves her alone in the next room to 'cry it out' are the same that would have flooded a cave infant's brain when exposed to the life-threatening danger of mommy's abscence.
