Does it only apply for alcoholic drinks or can you eat food where alcohol is an ingredient (cakes, for example), but doesn't make you drunk? How about make ups or body lotions?

Alcohol whenever its applied for food or drink, Muslim people are not aloud to eat or drink it. When its contain alcohol, the food will stated down as non halal food.
There for when its applied to perfume, several discussion has been made among the Muslim country. some say Muslim people can use the perfume however they have to clean it during praying.
Nowadays there is several item not only on food, there is halal logo's which is Muslim people can use it without any doubts.

I dont think cakes here in Islamic countries contain alcohol. Otherwise if they do then its the type of alcohol that makes you drunk thats forbidden.

All alcohol is forbidden, even as an ingredient in food, or even just perfume.

All alcohol is banned in Muslim countries, but that does not mean people who want it cannot get it. There are severe penalties If caught with alcohol in muslim countries.

unless you're life is on the line, like you're threated at gunpoint or something of that nature or you're about to die of starvation, alcohol is forbidden, no exceptions.
