I think it's more about liberation, because the master had gone away, the singer decided he didn't need to watch over Jimmy and so Jimmy cracked corn but the singer of the song didn't care.

There are lots of silly songs in the repertoire, sung because they are fun, not because they have any profound significance. Consider "Oh, Susannah" and "I've Been Working on the Railroad" as two examples; obviously, the genre has been around for a while.
