Steamed Snow Crab Legs Recipe
I know that many advocate using seasoning and boiling crab legs, but I like the simplicity of the naturally sweet and rich flavor of crab legs that have been steamed. Using a two-piece pasta pot with the strainer portion as a steamer insert works well to perfectly steam crab legs. I always serve clarified butter for dipping the crab meat.
3-4 cups water
2 lbs snow crab legs, frozen
4 servings
16 minutes 10 mins prep
In a large pasta pot with strainer insert, bring 3-4 cups water to boil. (Water amount may vary, but just keep below the level of the strainer portion of the pot.).
Rinse ice from frozen crab legs, and place in the strainer insert of the pot. Cover.
Steam crab legs for 4 to 6 minutes, or until heated through.

When you buy frozen crab legs, they're already cooked. They don't need much preparation time. They won't change color because--like I said--they're already cooked.
Have the water boiling already, and seasoned with something like Old Bay. Maybe a lemon in the water too. Drop the crab legs in the boiling wate.
But they don't need to be in there long. You only leave them in there long enough for them to defrost and warm up--four minutes at the most.
If you choose to steam them, make sure the water is boiling before you steam, and make sure there's a lid. Steaming takes LESS time than boiling because steam is hotter, but don't overpack the steamer. Don't cook for too long, or the shells will become soft and the crabmeat will get mushy and bland.
Have your melted butter and sliced lemons ready because as soon as you pull them out, they're ready to serve.
I use a huge spagetti pot with spagetti basket so that I can heat more at once. That way I can serve a big servingbowl to my family at once. A steamer has a smaller capacity.

Make sure you thaw them in the fridge overnight then steam, don't boil. Put just a little more then enough water to cover the bottom of the pot and get it boiling, put the legs in and when it boils again, cover and steam for about 5-6 minutes, Remember, they're cooked so you just want to heat them and while heating, you don't want to boil away any more of that delicious crab flavour. P.S, if you want to make a great dipping butter, just simmer a little garlic and a pinch of tarragon in a melted stick of butter for a few minutes. ENJOY! p.s. Your boyfriends mom gave you the proper directions for cooking a live lobster. 13 minutes EXACTLY LOL

What the other answerers said... and make sure you do not overcook. When you crack a crab leg, the meat should slide out easily in one piece. If you over cook them, it will be very difficult to get the meat out of the shells. In addition, they lose their sweetness.
Butter for dipping is good - and add squeezes of fresh lemon. YUM!
