I just bought a 1993 Thunderbird V8 5.0L LX for $900. The body and interior are in perfect condition, as is the motor. there are a couple superficial things like 1 blown speaker and a cracked gear (plastic) on the passenger side power lock assembly. The ONLY thing wrong with this car of any real concern is the transmission. At just shy of 125000 miles, this car has been well maintained, and might go another 100k with a rebuilt transmission. I have a quote for just under $18000 for a complete rebuild, including hard parts (any damaged housing or steel gears). This car is supposed to get around 310 hp, and considering the condition of everything else I really want your opinions.

IS IT WORTH IT???

You ought to be able to buy trannies for this car all day at $700. Check with a salvage yard for a low mileage wreck and see what they want. Sometimes you can get them to warranty it for another $100.

I think you forgot the other typo.....that motor would be far from stock at 310 hp....youd be lucky to find 210 in a stock 5.0...but the H.O version may get ya 225 or so. Check with you local parts place man they sell warranted transmissions that may be cheaper than a rebuil at the shop. Just a thought

18 grand for a rebuilt tranny? Is is going to be with custom ratio titanium straight-cut CNC gears, water-cooled, and a dual cast iron case? There is no way it should cost that much for a rebuilt- around $3500 max.
Isn't that 18 grand worth more than car??

Yes it is worth it. Rebuild the transmission when it goes out. It may have already been rebuilt once.

Yes, if you like the car and plan to keep and drive it for a few years. I'd shop around for a tranny that will work in it.
$18,000 is too much.

Not for $18,000. If that is a quote just for the tranny, I hope its a mis-type. It is worth it if it is $1,800. Nice cars, fast and comfortable. YES

I hope you meant under $1800 because for under $18,000 you can get yourself a new car!

For 900 bucks, why not? I paid twice that for a mountain bike.
