The fact is, the Windows registry and program Dynamic Link Library dependencies are absolutely "ideal" for viruses...almost like Windows was designed specifically for them. (Well, Windows is designed to be backwards compatible, synergetic, and have a common user interface.)
On windows, there are several different methods ANY program can access the API, code, and settings of any other program and the Windows OS itself. Task Managers, Firewalls, and Anti-virus software are just programs themselves...with the same weaknesses.
On top of that, many legitimate programs have parts that work the same way as virises. So the only way for Anti-virus software really recognise a virus is by recognising specific strings in the virus program itself. That's why they need to keep updating. If they don't already know about the virus, or the virus has re-packed (jumbled) itself, it's impossible to recognise the virus.

Different viruses and other threats work in different ways, but its mostly to do with a preprogrammed action happening in a set way automaticcally:
Some types are Worm Viruses which will sit on your active proccesses and duplicate again and again and again, taking up the memory you need to run your programs, slowing you down.
Data Destruction Viruses will alter the coding on your data files (Documents) to make the computer not able to open the full thing.
Program destruction Viruses will acctually change the programs on your computer so that they don't open like they should.
Trojans will set up a network to the senders computer, so the sender can gain unauthorised access to your computer.

They are a small program like any other. Usually with an .exe extension - so if an attachment has an .exe extension on an email - it is probably a virus. Most software has to be installed to give you associations between the data files and the program file. You click an MP3 and a music player plays it. Some programs aren't installed and Windows isn't aware of them. they can access the Internet and "phone home" - they can make copies of themselves - hence the term virus - they reproduce.

A virus is just a little tiny chunk of code. When it get executed, it just tells your computer to do something, like "erase your hard drive", or "send an email to all your friends". These instructions usually only take a few lines of code. You computer can't distiguish between viruses and legitimate programs, cause it's just a set of instructions for it. That's why you need a virus scanner to identify these little programs and delete them.

they work by replicating a program that eats more and more system resources that in the end your p.c slows down to a crawl, this is around the time you start realising you have a virus
that is why every p.c user should use anti-virus software, especially when you can get free programs, theres no excuse, they are just infecting the rest of us

If someone or something infects your computer its because of a website that has a hacking device installed in it that eats away at the memory of your computer
Why people would want to do this??? Beats me lol

Well, a virus tends to have specific functions...these functions don't need high CPU or RAM usage...
For example, monitor all EXE's that run...add 1KB of wrong data to the header of the file...that's it...the file is damaged

virus is a program written to destroy data, make errors, or occupy all the space on your harddrive. they are made not to be seen, you might see one if you look in processes column. but only professional can tell what process is fot what - so don't bother yourself, just get right antivirus and regularly download updates - and keep your windows happy, download servicepacks too

They get inside of your computer system just like a virus does in your body and they find what they're looking for (ie, important systems) and begin to work on them. They don't necessarily start right away but they do their damage. I would suggest getting avg virus protection and spybot spyware. I think you can download them off of download.com and they are free and legal downloads.
