Yes, religion itself can hold people back. There is a difference between religion and faith. Religion is the act of worship, while faith is the belief in God and His promises.

If you are so wrapped up in religion that you forget about faith...you are being held back. I know many people that are so indoctrinated in "church" that they live and breathe church church church. They are looking for status in the church and to stand out as a "religious" person because they have the "Jesus Fish" on their cars or the Nativity Scene in their yards at Christmas.... Those things don't make you a good Christian....just religious.

Religion is a group or cult! But when your refer to a way of life and a set of rules that GOD gave mankind to live by - then yes it should hold you back to some extent. Because GOD is keeping the law and order for mankind - without rules and regulations mankind goes nuts and runs amock- as we are now - as no-one is really practicing the right "religion" or following the rules set out by GOD. Just take the set of rules mankind got - 10 commandments - who is following that and see what is happening??? I think we all need to be held back because we know too much and too much knowledge can be very bad for you - however, self-discipline and sometimes enforced discipline is good and it should hold you back - as mankind has very little resolve in doing so by himself.

Strict "religion" does hold you back. Religion is about do's and don'ts. Its about rules and traditions.
BUT- Christianity is about knowing the living God- the ultimate reality. It is relationship.

If you look at the smartest and best people throughout history during the past 2000 years you will find they were Christians. Do some people claim to be "Christian" and commit evil? Of course but so do a lot of other people.

Jesus said, "It is for freedom that I have set you free."
Freedom is certainly not about holding someone back.

I use to think that it did but now I have decided I would have to make it a part of my life no matter what comes. I don't claim to be perfect and I have yet to find someone perfect. I have nothing to lose but more to gain by being a christian. There are people on here that want to believe there is no god. If they can convince their conscience there is no god they feel it won't cramp their style. Living a christian life is not hard. It's what we must do. Just accepting Jesus when he made it so easy is really the way it should be.

Religion only holds people back (mentally backwards) when they believe in it. Believing in religion or God is a mental illness.

Religion is a serious mental illness. It’s the inability to face the reality of life and the finality of death. It affects 85% of the USA and 75% of US victims are Christians. The more pathetic and desperate a persons life, the more likely they are to believe in a god. People with otherwise empty lives, are the strongest believers. It gives them false hope that there’s a higher meaning to their sad and pathetic lives.

Religious people are dangerous. They cannot think for themselves, but instead cling to every word the bible says. Religious fanatics can somehow throw out all scientific evidence and replace it with the word of one book that has no credibility.

Recognising religion as a type of mental illness would be a good start to help cure this disease. We should develop support groups along the lines of Alcoholics Anonymous - “My name is Sam and I’m a recovering Christian ...”

Religion can hold one back if it blinds one to advances in science that may benefit the whole of mankind. I just don't think that it is moral to put less of an importance on an older person's life than an embryo, whose life hasn't even started yet...
