L.Ron Hubbard, hack science fiction writer and follower of Aleister Crowley started a hoax called Dianetics in 1950. Dianetics claimed they could create super human beings after shutting off the "reactive mind" (the subconcious) a scientific impossibility. When the FDA decided Hubbard was practicing medicine, he went on the lam until he came up with Scientology (Dianetics + reincarnation). Hubbard got in trouble for tax evasion, among other things, so, he created the Sea Org and sailed in to countries where the U.S. didn't have extradition treaties.
Scientology/Dianetics "auditing" is really just a mild form of hypnosis. But even mild forms can cause people to hallucinate (into believing they were aliens in their past lives millions of years ago for instance), and it can cause people to be susceptable to the auditors commands. Some people spend thousands of dollars in auditing, with no real results that can be verified in a labratory. There's are three great books you can read online about Dianetics/Scientology for free. The Barefaced Messiah, A Piece of Blue Sky, and The Story of Scientology

Scientology was started by a mediocre science fiction writer name L. Ron Hubbard. He lost touch with reality and started believing his own science fiction. It's true.
He gathered a following and for many years he and some of his groupies cruised the world on his yacht because the Feds were after him for fraud.

Scientology is total science fiction- you can still find Hubbard's science fiction books and read them for yourself.

Tom Cruise and the few other Hollywood types have been totally dupped. Money doesn't make a person smart or good.

Best of life to you.

Scientology is the religion founded by L.Ron Hubbard, the science fiction author. I suspect the religion was originally started as a mean-spirited joke, but for various reasons, the fact that it was a joke was never revealed. It is no wonder so many Hollywood celebrities are Scientologists. To believe in their tenets, one would have to suspend one's disbelief and believe in a science-fiction tale.
