You clothes dryer might be 220 volt while your plug is set up for standard (lower) voltage. If so you will have to run or have an electrician run a special line for the clothes dryer.

I had this problem and just had to switch the cover to the 220 outlet to match the cord to the dryer, or you can do vice versa, but switching the outlet cover is easier. Just be sure it's a 220 outlet. Take a picture of the plug and bring it with you to the home depot or wherever you shop. The outlet cover is usually only held on with one screw. And of course be careful not to let the screwdriver touch the metal part of the outlet. If you're clutzy or have never done this, turn the breaker off first.

Alexander got it right. There are virtually no dryers that use 110V, and the 220V ones have plugs incompatable with 110V outlets.

You might have to get a swith out to a different cord if you live in a newer house or apartment.
