Women metabolize or process alcohol less efficiently than men, and also usually weigh less, so between the two and wanting to give an easy to remember amount, they rounded off to one drink and two drinks. Of course it depends directly on weight, so if the woman is 160 and the man is 140lbs, they should probably drink approx. 1.5 drinks to meet this RDA. <-- that's a joke. There really isn't any RDA, there are studies that show drinking small quantities of alcohol reduce the chances of several diseases, but on the other hand they also show increased chances of liver disease, etc. The point is that if you take a 200 lb man and a 120 lb woman and give him 2 drinks and her 1 drink, wait a half hour and test them, their skills would have diminished equally (approximately).

Why are lower levels of drinking recommended for women than for men? Because women are at greater risk than men for developing alcohol-related problems. Alcohol passes through the digestive tract and is dispersed in the water in the body. The more water available, the more diluted the alcohol. As a rule, men weigh more than women, and, pound for pound, women have less water in their bodies than men. Therefore, a woman’s brain and other organs are exposed to more alcohol and to more of the toxic byproducts that result when the body breaks down and eliminates alcohol.

Well, some women drink more than men, but I believe your observation overall is correct: on a whole, men drink more. I think it really only deals with size... afterall, a 180 lb male should be expected to handle more alchohol than a 120 lb female.

Women have to keep their head clear enough to process all that goes on in their heads, lives, and surroundings.
While men just have to think of where their next drink is coming from and who to poke next!

someone has to be the responsible one, she has a lot more to loose, she is afraid you will take advantage of her, women are less stupid- on average- than men.. Decent women are repulsed, almost as if it is genetically, by drunken men because they are not responsible, and usually rude and self centered brats after one thing..
