Here's the real info, direct from the Selective Service website:
Contrary to popular belief, "only sons," "the last son to carry the family name," and "sole surviving sons" must register and they can be drafted. However, they may be entitled to a peacetime deferment if there is a military death in the immediate family.
Provisions regarding the survivors of veterans were written into Selective Service law after World War II. Details have varied over the years, but the basic premise remains the same; where a family member has been lost as a result of military service, the remaining family members should be protected insofar as possible.
It is important to keep in mind that the provisions are directly related to service-connected deaths. The mere fact that a man is the only child or only son does not qualify him for exemption - he must be the survivor of one who died as a result of military service.

Being an only child does not exempt you from being drafted! The only way you can get out of being drafted is if one of your siblings or parents has died as a result of military service (to include all sons). However this exemption is not in effect during war time...You don't have to worry any how...there is no draft at this time...and I don't think we will have one since we converted into a all volunteer-military. BESIDES we're not at world war or anything.

There is no draft, but if it were reinstated that statement is
not really true.
You must be sole surviving son or daughter who has already lost a brother, sister, Mom, or Dad to War. You must having no other siblings. And most important this is only during a peace time draft. During wartime there is no exemption for only child at all.
We have not had a peace time draft since 1940.

speaking from an Air stress stand element, in case you have been to enlist interior the USAF, your loved ones might have the potential to trip with you the place ever you get stationed, no count if its relatives or overseas. reckoning on your AFSC (job) you may or would possibly not get deployed; or you're transforming into a low probability of having deployed, yet that would basically final for a pair of months. so some distance as i understand, each and each branch has the comparable pay, in accordance to rank and how long you have been in enlisted. i'm uncertain with regard to the pay for officers. additionally, pay can boost in case you acquire bonuses for you AFSC - no count if its from flight pay(Airborne undertaking structures, Airborne Cryptologics) or your job is unsafe(in case you have been a PJ or TACP). If money is your considerable characteristic of each and every branch in determining which to connect, you may desire to strongly re-evaluate. To make your settlement rather well worth the time interior the protection stress, you may desire to connect for a extraordinarily good objective.

If the draft is reinstated, and you are the sole support of your family, then no. Or at least that's how it was when we had the draft.
