Galileo was placed under house arrest after he published a book which defended the idea of heliocentrism. He later diied under house arrest. In 1992, the pope admitted that the treatment of Galileo was unfair.

Are there any christians that would agree that the apology came too late? He turned out to be right in his beliefs long before 1992.

"He was given time to recant but he didnt"

He stood by his beliefs. That surely deserves some respect. Would you prefer that he recant and forget about it? The church was wrong and he was right.

Why worry about Galileo? He knew what the going doctrine was and he knew he would spoil the party with his ideas. Frankly he was rightly strung. He was given time to recant, but he refused. He could have saved his own skin but he choose not to.

ERATOSTHENES calculated the circumference of the earth around 200 BC, yet, through catholic influence, it was thought to be flat for many centuries. The ancients had lots of knowledge that was "forgotten" because the apostate "church" believed it to be heresy.

Apologies can never come too late. As our knowledge expands, so does our understanding of the world. You can't judge another period by today's standards.

Well, YEAH!!! That isn't too hard to figure out. As a Catholic, the Catholic Church is far too slow to change and except truths that aren't centuries old.
