Laws are established to keep society from collapsing on itself correct? They are there to make sure the world can function and progress, that is their nature. So when you start making laws about things that have nothing to do with anything besides your personal beliefs, or anyone's personal beliefs, it starts to get arbitary. Sure it's not against our constitution or any laws, but can't you just see it's wrong? Don't you feel bad about making some one else less happy just so your views are secure and you feel warm and fuzzy inside? It's not a matter of legality for me, it's a matter of being a considerate compassionate human being. Why can't some people just have their own views and be happy, why do they have to make sure everyone else is subjected to their way of thinking (this goes for the overbearing atheists too)?

My point is, laws aren't there to make you happy, they're there to make sure you aren't raped, mugged, or murdered and we can progress as a society. Right?

I didn't give any specific examples to avoid looking biased and so people from any viewpoint could see it. And I'm an atheist so I probably wouldn't have got so many good answer if I through in what I saw as wrong because so many people are religious and would automatically disagree. But I think most of us can think of at least one example.

Law are supposed to make people equal regardless of personal beliefs. The instance a new law is created for the personal beliefs of a group, the country's integrity is compromised.

Would it surprise you then that most Europeans want to distance themselves from America as it seems that the agenda is heavily learning towards the personal beliefs of some, not what is best for all regardless of beliefs.

Would it surprise you that most British people think that the UK goverment has completely lost the plot when being politically correct. I would be very surprised if they won another election due to such things removing Christmas decorations in goverment building 'incase' someone may get offended! Obsurdity of the highest order!!

Good thing about the UK though, is that not only the does the House of Lords but the Queen herself have to give their stamp of approval before a new law is passed. It is unlikely here that such laws that are only for a set few people will be passed for the masses.

Laws aren't here to make you happy, that is true, but they're here BECAUSE there are: rapists, muggers, and murderers in our society. We would actually progress as a society without them in it. Right?
So therefore, we as being only human, seek to share what we have found makes our life more enjoyable, and helps us to get through it. Life is all about making the correct choices. People by nature, would want others to do the same. The problem comes in when you have so many different religions and viewpoints about them. We can't all be right. Even those that don't believe in God, have a religion. The religion of non-belief. It is their own belief. Even though we do have free will, and are under grace, some people will still make the wrong choice that will ultimately lead to their eternal destruction. Even if they don't believe, it will still happen. We were given a book to read and follow as our guide through life. And just like we can't all be right, that many people can't be wrong about that book.

Right. I think you are absolutely, 100% right.
The problem is, no one in this planet is a perfect human being.
People are not only selfish, but what is even more concerning, they think they are doing what is best for you.

Let's see, there are rules that everyone can agree on:
Murder is wrong and should be punished.
Rape is wrong and should be punished.
Steal is wrong and should be punished (and let's not forget that a good part of communist beliefs would like to sharpen that statement).
This last statemente brings me to another idea: in society, there are numerous forces, an never ending multitude of different viewpoints that must be conciliated. In a civilized and democratic society, rules are not made by only one person.They are made by a group of persons that will try to please the society in a whole and do what's best for her.
What screws all this are lobbys and pressure groups trying to get ahead and influence law-makers, showing one-way views of what is good for society.
Worse than that, there are groups of people making laws that self-appointedly think they are doing what's right for you and the society around you. Trying to, for instance, put organized forms of religion out of the map /in the map is unfair and destroys some freedoms. (the whole controversy with religious symbols being allowed into schools, as well as the idea that prying in schools should be mandatory, are some examples ).

So, in a nutshell, I agree with you. But since the only power that we have is the vote and the ability to make noise in support for the causes that we feel strongly for, we can only do what is in reach to try and stop laws (and law-makers) that put their own (finantial?) interests in front of the interests of a democratic society.

I agree with you fully. And I'm not quite sure which laws you are talking about...but I do find it sad that many people are offended by things that have been in place since the start of America. Things like removing the ten commandments from courthouses for one, i do totally agree with you that is wrong that these people just cant have their own views and leave everything the way it was. I do feel that by doing this they are imposing their way of thinking upon me. This is America , I believe that everybody should have the right to believe in what they want to believe without being imposed on by others. I also feel that it is sad when a single person can have something removed that has been in place since the beggining of our country because they feel "offended".

I know what you are saying. I think some of the people that have had laws passed are the parent's of loved ones that were raped, murdered, or abducted. For those people, something unfortunate had to happen to them in order to get a law passed. For them, I believe they got their justice. I'm sure it doesn't make their pain go away, but may offer some sort of closure. I do think it's wrong that something bad has to happen to an innocent person in order to see a law passed.

Unfortunately people are only jumped up monkeys on two legs. Laws regulate so people are afraid to do things that they know are wrong, people crave direction and boundaries. Laws are different everywhere, in this country adultery is not against the law, but we know that it is wrong, in other countries it is a capital offense, where do we draw the line?? I belive you are right , we have the RIGHT to PURSUE happiness, which means that we have to WORK for it, but we are not entitled to it just because it is written down. People make their own fates.

Laws are also established to protect those who cannot protect themselves for some reason. Laws are established to establish safety of citizens, and to establish good order in the community. There are laws to protect you in many ways, not just keep you from being raped, mugged, or murdered... there are laws to provide for quiet spaces around hospitals, laws to provide for quiet at night so people can sleep, etc.

hell add thes words up to a single digit as see why the world sometimes sucks

god=cutoff

h=god=good angel=angel of death

of death is ta ed

angel=aI79el

America cut a / out of the A and cut m into rri and write that over America and see you are one nation under (the way they in italia would pronounce the name of) God. Also from Canada your nation is in a way under God. The Devil. really did go down to georgia... wasn't aware at the time that He needed a soul.

i show them angel=aI79el and I is God and the church cuts me out of the profits. a I79 as my ID shows. and the good news bible said in Ex.3 that an angel of the LORD is God. and of the times new ROMAN font LORD is name TODD born I7.9.

so definitly I WAS God. but nobody bowed.

new world translation of the holy scriptures says Satan ruled the world as god.

and all soul were said to belong to God or Satan. So what if God Himself put a 1000 year seal on Satan as an M which equals 1000 also M=IVI stitched together. So My right hand was God and the left was Satan. And Satan was a rebelious angel(aI79el) cause He tried to kill God?

ain't that a laff riot.

Yes Dan, you are absolutely correct but Separation of Church and State protects them as well. Without it the government could pick a religion inimical to the one they have, such as Ancient Rome did, and crucify anyone who does not believe in the state religion.

Sounds good on its face, but I'd need to have some examples of those "arbitrary laws" you are talking about to make the best judgment.
