Charleston would be the better choice.More diverse than Beaufort.There are alot of strange people in Beaufort.

I live in South Carolina.
Charleston is absolutely wonderful. Was there on this past Monday. Lots of shopping and eating on Market, Meeting, and King Streets!! Market street has an outdoor covered flea market of sorts with all sorts of beautiful items, clothing, jewelry. These three streets are directly parallel and perpendicular to each other. You can walk up and down downtown Charleston. So much history. So much old money, abundance of history and folklore. You will see Bentleys, Mayback, and yes, even Rolls Royces, and in a southern city, you typically do not see these types of cars in one day! I did! No skyscrapers, but a lot of big city charm and sophistication. Please take advantage of all the tours, both land and water.
Beaufort - beautiful scenery. Been there for the Gullah Festival, and to visit Parris Island, the Marine Corp Training Depot.

It depends on what you want in a place to live. If you want a small city, then it's Beaufort
