If the ministers are corrupt hypocrites, what does one expect the flock to become?
If the churches are nothing more than non-profit fronts for drug money, what does one expect the flock to become?
If the minister is accused of pedophilia and makes $650,000 bail, what does one expect the flock to become?

There are a few complicated issues at work here.
First, although someone might claim to know God/be a Christian, doesn't make it true. You have to look for the "fruit of the Spirit". If someone says they are a Christian, but yet is in a life of sin (drugs, crime, sex outside of marriage, whatever the case may be) then that says that they really do NOT know God. They are not producing "good fruit", therefore they are not Spirit-filled Christians. Truly spirit-filled Christians may slip up and sin once in a while (in which case they need to repent and turn away from it), but they do NOT live lives full of crime, hate, and other sins. You can go to church every Sunday, sing songs, read the Bible, etc., and just be going through the motions--doing those things does not make you a Christian. It is having Jesus in your heart, making Him the Lord of your life, that makes you a Christian. If you have Him in your life and seek to do His will then your life will not be full of all this sin.
Second, some Black Americans in leadership positions suggest that a lot of the problem rests with cultural issues. Specifically, not wanting to work (attitude of "why work when you can depend on handouts such as welfare?"), having a "victim mentality", being raised to believe that dressing and behaving like a gang member is cool, being raised with the attitude of going to jail being a cool thing, and trying to do well in school and nurture your intellect is "acting white". The whole idea that a Black person is a traitor to their race if they speak well, dress well, do well in school, and work hard is a force that works against the individual. It doesn't help that most Black celebrities, sports stars, etc. buy into all of this. Rap artists and other influential Black role models only further this crippling ideology.
I think it is not Christianity that is hurting Blacks, rather it is the lack of true born-again Christians and all these cultural influences that are to blame. The ideas that you are raised with about how you are supposed to be have a HUGE impact on your attitudes about life and therefore your ultimate success (or lack thereof). If more Black Americans (and other racial groups too) were truly Bible-believing Spirit-filled Christians, they would have a different moral code in their homes to begin with. There wouldn't be out-of-wedlock births, crime, and all these other things that plague humanity as a whole. The ultimate foundation of society is family. If you come from a broken home, where your parent did not teach you the proper morals and ethics and such, it is so much more difficult for you to find your place in society. Our first education about morals and interpersonal relationships come from our parents. Family values are very, very important to society. Start improving family values/morals/standards, and society will follow suit.
No matter our race or ethnicity, we all need God. Without Him, we are lost. God is the ultimate source of all true and good moral law. God shows us a way of thinking about sin and the world that helps us to overcome sin and live in His blessings and harmony with others. The ultimate problem is sin and the ultimate answer is God.

I agree with the person who is asking the question. Especially with points 2 &3....I don't know much about 1 &4...
I'm not African American but work in an African American community (poor/semi urban) and see it every day. I don't know what the answer is but I think it has something to do with how kids are raised.
I work with kids and they and most of their parents are strong in their Christian beliefs. Yet, some of the parents are on drugs, in jail, dead, and the kids are in foster care, or living with extended family members. And, when most of the kids find out I do not believe in or follow Christianity, they all seem surprised and inform me i'm going to go to hell, they go to church every Sun., and other days, as well.
I don't think there really is an answer. And, if there is, I think we're too scared to think about it and the social changes that may come with it. It's about time though, that someone mentioned this...I'm so sick of people saying our society is one of equality and that there are few or no race problems!

They do not have the highest crime rate.
A small segment of that population has a high crime rate. Have you checked out the Asians, Latino, Russian, Italian, Polish inner-city community?
They are not the most devoted Christians....they are maybe the most "open" about their belief.
Before you make these generalized statement...step back and educate your self. You are a "Clarence Thomas".

Ethnicity and religious beliefs are not related in crime. Religion is the refuge of those who accept concepts that cannot be proved or disproved. It is a deliberate state of ignorance. This is a universal phenomenon.
Crime in the Black or any other community is related to socio-economic factors. I believe that USA Blacks have come to accept a secondary position in society because of concessions after slavery in the name of itegration and equal rights that in reaity contributed to a status quo. Shelby Steele explains in "White Guilt" how Blacks and Whites together destroyed the promise of hte civil rights era.

Apparently not all Black Americans are devoted Christians. Don't blame the crime of some on the devotion of others.

It appears to be not working out for them. I don't know why it hasn't registered. Perhaps you should write an article in a magazine or newspaper somewhere addressing that issue to make more people aware of the situation.
