I was watching a movie last night, the main character was about to inject drug into arm. First he hit his arm a few times there, then pumped his arm a few times. I understand pumping the arm to increase the vein size, but why hit it?

I do that before I start iv's.

Flicking the area near a vein causes histamine release, which is a vasodilator. It makes the vein larger and easier to find and cannulate.

I believe that the correct answer to this question is to cause constriction of the vessel, thereby preventing the needle from rolling off the vein. Hence it hardens the vessel, creating a more stable structure for penetration of the hypodermic.

I pinch myself when I'm getting a shot to distract myself from the needle. Maybe the actor is just trying to numb the area where he's going to get the injection.
