or does it only affects the person with the bad (actually horrible) karma?

Karma as defined by Buddhism is merely what we think, say and do to each other. Everyone has their own Karma by that definition and of course if someone in the family has a lousy attitude and constantly angers other people, that will also affect the family. The attitude of that person affects the family and the consequences of their attitude may kick back to them only, but make their attitude even worse and the family would again be affected.

If you think of karma as something that you're given as a result of another life they have lived, it would basically be the same dillema for the family of the person negatively affected. They would be hurt in various ways, probably not understanding why because they don't remember a previous life and may be very good people in this life, but the family would feel their pain and misery, which comes through their love.

Personally, I believe we all are given challenges of all types to deal with in this lifetime. It has nothing to do with Karma but merely the lessons we need to learn while on earth. Whatever they are, they are hard for the person bearing them.

There's no such thing as bad karma. Family members who make bad choices in life or who have fallen on tough times through know fault of their own need to be patient and understanding with each other. You are the only one who can control which direction your life goes...

Obviously you are aware of it. so, if your conscious of it and worried then you can be distracted and make mistakes your self.
You are the only one that set goals for your life. You control what you do, Karma is a poor way to live your live.
