In the King James Version it says it was a huge whale. In other versions it says a huge fish. The Fin Whale is 66 feet long.

This event took place in the Mediterranean Sea, somewhere between Joppa and Tarshish. It is said that the whale seldom passes into that sea, and that its throat is too small to admit a man. It is probable, therefore, that a fish of the shark kind is intended. Sharks have been known often to swallow a man entirely. The fish in the book of Jonah is described merely as a 'great fish,' without specifying the kind. It is well known that the Greek word translated 'whale' in the New Testament does not of necessity mean a whale, but may denote a large fish or sea-monster of any kind.

It was the Mediterranean Sea and it could've have been a fish or a whale due to the lack of classification between fish and mammal at the time. Some accounts have shown that a large enough sperm whale could have an esophagus up to a foot and a half wide in which a small framed man could fit through. Sperm whales have been known to swallow giant squid that are much larger than a man, and they have been know through out history to swim in the Mediterranean. Another possibility could be the whale shark or a great white. The fact of the matter is that if God created everything in the first place, logically speaking he could direct any whale or fish and make the impossible possible.

Since he left the port of Joppa in Israel, I think it woul dhave to be in the Medeteranean

the word in hebrew porbbaly allows any sea creature whale or fish, a whale more likely being air breathing and no reason to believe God didnt call a special whale that lives normally in another ocean to come for that purpose... so the particular type is not restrictred to Medeteranean whales

The Bible never uses the word "whale" - only "great fish". And whales are mammals, not fish.

"17 Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. "

No evidence of a big fish or a whale ever inhabiting the Med. Just another biblical fairy story.

Carry on believing what you will - enjoy.

Read the account it never said whale, ever! Don't know who started that vicious rumor.
It said, Big fish! World of difference there.
They do have huge sharks and they do swallow things whole.
Besides it was under God's direction so sent probably a really big one. It could not have been a whale they have a small throat and everyone already established it was a shark years ago where have you been? That misconception was corrected
