Is it possible to change a 6 yr old's sleep pattern? My son has always been early getting up in the mornings - anywhere between 4 a.m and 6 a.m. He's never slept beyond 6.15a.m. Have tried blackout blinds, reward charts, punishment, later bedtimes. He has lots of exercise, goes to bed exhausted, sleeps pretty solidly but this 4 a.m. start is terrible for all of us.I'd like to know if any parents have tips and also success stories on gradually moving the time he wakes til a more civilised time - would be delighted for 6.30 a.m. start - anything later would be a bonus! Please help

Some patients that I know of were actually diagnosed with just really heavy sleep. It was to the point where they slept so hard that their body was fully compensated and that it just didn't need anymore sleep. Does he do alot of activities during the day to help tire him out and at least an hour wind down period. What time does he go to bed and does he toss and turn or still sleeper. This obviously is very problematic for you why not talk to a doc and get a sleep study done just to make sure there is not an underlying problem where he does sleep too soundly. Good Luck!

Have you tried putting him to bed at a later time? Maybe he is getting all the sleep he needs by 4am. It might be worth a try putting him to bed 2 hours later.
