It won't even let us on...so says my kid! I haven't looked into it. This sounds idiotic to me. If the computer came w/XP installed, can't we just re-install it?

I'm using a different computer, with an older version OS. The computer in question was donated by my kid's school, w/XP already installed. Does that make it "pirated"? I don't think the director would do that...but maybe he's wrong, too!

If you can do a restore to one day ago then activate windows with microsoft if not you can repair as below

Use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to re install click activate wndows then register wih microsoft

If you just bought the pc then u need to activate ur copy of windows, so microsoft can be sure that someone has actually bought it and that its not a fake (pirated) copy. to do this you need 2 hook ur pc up to the internet and click on the activation icon at the bottom right corner of the screen. when u first buy the pc the icon will appear, and if you havent activated it after a while (about two weeks) all other features of windows will b disabled (ie. u wont b able 2 run any programs or do anything) until you activate. so like i said before u need to hook ur pc up to the internet and then click on the activation icon, and follow the instructions from there. after ur done then u should be able to use ur computer normally.

Yes, your son is right. If you did not register for 30 days and the registration time has passed, you wont be able to log on to windows.

If you have the registered windows (original software), all you need to do it run the CD and install the windows afresh formatting the previous windows installed (dont format it yourself, when you run the windows CD, before new installation starts, you will be prompted for formtting the hard drive, chose to format there).

When new installation is complete, resgister the windows with microsoft.

If its activation ur talking about then, sounds like u missed the activation time limit.
Did u have a balloon notification in the bottom right corner that kept asking u to activate?

Try booting up in "safe mode with networking", then see if can activate XP online then.

you arent forced to register with microsoft, you have to activate it. while you can use the recovery cd that came with the computer, its a matter of reactivating it, if for some reason your wpa is bad.

look into it and elaborate, this doesnt happen with a legitimate windows installation
