At about eighteen months old, you'll notice him using one hand more than the other although he'll still have this habit of switching back and forward. By about two years, it will be obvious he definitely favours one hand and by two-and-a-half, he'll definitely have chosen whether he's right or left-handed.

My daughter was the same way at 15 months. I'm not sure when she switched to using her right hand predominantly, but she's definately right handed now, and she just turned 2. Watch your son for a few months and you'll see him start to prefer one hand over the other.

With some kids, you can tell fairly early on...at about 1-2 years. However I would guess that to be sure, you'd have to wait till they were around 3-4 years old and consistantly using one hand or the other.

around ages 2 or 3. I have one left-handed girl, but we knew pretty early because she would grab toys with her left hand, and the spoon, and crayon. She is 5 now, and is all left-handed. I also have a right-handed boy, and a right handed girl. I knew pretty early with them too. Just see what hand he mostly plays with.

I don't think that you will know for sure till school hits, because my son does the same thing. I think he'll be right handed, because I notice he does more with that hand, and also because a majority of my family is right handed. Letting him color might also help you determine that.
