U.S dollars. Those can be changed into quite a few rupees back home. Most other things you make in India or get from China cheaper. If your family eats meat, then she could bring some good cuts of prime rib, or salmon--freeze it and pack it in a special vacuum-packed container. It should survive the flight if you get a direct flight that leaves in the evening.

PICTURES!!! There is no place like new york, and if you cant see it in person, the next best thing is pictures and home video! On top of many of the famous skyscrapers, they allow pictures, and from that high, the views are amazing!!! Of course souvenirs, lighters things from the statue of liberty. Not to forget, something from barneys!
