As Hitler was needed by the Germans to 'protect' them from the evil Jews, Gypsies, Homosexuals and the rest of the world in general.
We all afraid.
And...
WE
CAN BE MANIPULATED BY
FEAR

Here is something I found on someone's blog. I think it nicely sums up everything you asked about:

"The kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, the kingdom of the lord. The kingdom is near. Why do they refer to it as a kingdom? Have you ever heard any priest or ordinary person referring it to as the constitution of heaven or the democracy of God? Does that make God a monarch? Or even worse, a dictator? The lord will tell you what to do and what not to and you shall follow or you will be punished. Yes, that sounds exactly like a tyranny. Shouldn’t the United Nations and Nato and other such watchdogs of good and evil in the modern world be worried with such an authoritarian head of the universe with not only access to weapons far more dangerous than mere mortal nuclear weapons and suicidal aircrafts, but also has the power to do just about anything? But why do people hate oppression yet romanticize kingdoms? Don’t they mean the same thing? Perhaps there is a notion that a monarchy is no harm as long as the king is a good one. So, is democracy meant to guarantee a good ruler and prevent the possibility of an evil king from gaining power? That is assuming the majority of the people are good. What are the odds of the majority of the world’s people being good and holly? If earth lies between heaven and hell, isn’t it likely that statistically there is an equal proportion of good an evil people in this world? Isn’t it a matter of pure chance that any given group or country of people could turn out to be mostly good or mostly evil? Is that a gamble sensible of taking when instituting a ruler? Most self proclaimed messengers of the Lord claim that weak humans are more tempted to go in evil’s way and man is evil by nature. Yet we let the majority decide."

This may come as a shock to you, but the word "protector" or "protecter' is not biblical (at least I could not find any verses containing it--please correct me if I am wrong.). However, the word protect is (28 times in NIV).

God comes to us by reveal knowledge which means we can not know/understand God except by revelation. In the 28 usage of the word protect, you will see God protects us not from our fellow man, but from the evil one.

Man forms governments to protect its citizens. The individuals gives up some of their freedoms in exchange for the benefits provided by the government.

The usage of the term big brother means an omnipresent, seemingly benevolent figure representing the oppressive control over individual lives exerted by an authoritarian government. A state, organization, or leader regarded in this manner. It comes from the novel 1984 by George Orwell.

So you question should read: Why do we need governments or big brother to protect us?

God established government in the Old Testament to provide protection and social services to the masses. The type of government God established was actually a type of theocracy. Read the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Judges for more information. The government was to protect the people from invading marauders and other countries as well provide moral guidance. The tithes were paid to the temple to care for the widows and the orphans. Taxes were started by the kings to raise money for the armies. There is strength in numbers. (The law of synergy). People united together for a common good will often overcome incredible odds and achieve amazing feats. That is why a strong God based and morally sound government is important.

God is our ultimate protector but the world today is not as it was meant to be. So until the end and God restores His perfect order; we have government, military, and police to protect us from the other guys/gals, the ones who don't believe in the living God. The people who want to be god on earth. And believe me, there are a lot of those people.

Do you think your government (big brother) is protecting you? Think again. There are many conflicts in this world - the thing that you CAN do and the thing you SHOULD do are different. We will be judged some day - on living a good life and doing the right thing - and it has nothing to do with 'government' who usually are corrupt anyway.

Because we need justice to stop violent crime and if we did not have government, there probably would be no justice. It doesn't appear like God is protecting anyone.

In the US, its because George is the decider, not God. George decides; God provides. Something like that, unless you live in New Orleans. Takes the responsibility off the Pres. doesn't it?

Ask the Jews persecuted by Nazi Germany or the Kurds from Sadaam's Iraq how well God protected them. or for that matter, how well their respective governments protected them.

'Nuff said.

It all started with Moses, in the Bible he couldn't handle all the complaints. and so God had assigned others to handle situations that were petty. And so that is the begining.
