I need something more from life...I was wondering if there's a place for me to volunteer all my time for a period of the year...someplace that would provide the basics in living--food, rest--and nothing else in return.

hostels let you do that, you can live there and volunteer to help out. but they don't have that many in usa

If you want to volunteer with all of that provided.
Be a live-in nanny. You can search for families
in need of one in your area and get a job here,
no cost to sign up either. This is very effective.
I did it.

Well there are many place to volunteer at. How about a children's hospital, nursing home, school, girl/boy scout leader. You just need to figure out what you are interested in, and how will you make a difference. Then just do it.

WHAT!?! What are you wanting to volunteer to DO? Letting somebody support you for a year? With you doing nothing in return? I'd say you odds aren't very good.
