I'm guessing that they may be known as 'Star bursts' internationally so they have re named them in the UK. It seems that nothing is sacred.... Oil of Olay (Ulay) and Cif (Jif) are also casualties of the same crazy phenomena. I like you prefer the name ' Opal Fruits' . I am a 30 something and some times ask my husband for a 'Marathon' he is 30 something and knows that I mean a 'Snickers' bar!!!!

Agree fully with you there - Opal Fruits is a much better name.
Was due to Mars having bought them out and doing so called Global Branding - same as they did with marathon, changing it to snickers, By having one universal brand name for a product a firm can save costs by producing a single global advertising and marketing campaign for all countries.
A single name also makes it easier for consumers to recognise a familiar brand when they are abroad. apparently!

Opel fruits where invented in Britain in 1960 and starburst came out in america in 1976 so the British invented them

yup its advertising led.....
for the same reason Marathon became Snickers, Jif became Cif
it enabled the product owner to adevrtise on pan european platforms like Sky, they could reduce the cost of creating the ad (it required one advert shot, still multiple voice overs)

"The Cheeseman" is WRONG, in typical american 'we invented everything' style.
They were actually created in england in 1960, NOT the USA.
They were later introduced in the USA as StartBurst in 1976.
As the answer, yes to standardise the international brand name.
