You can refuse it - you must refuse it - when it is un-ethical to receive it. It can indebt you to the giver, in which case it is a form of corruption. In some professions it unacceptable to receive any gift above a very menial amount in a professional environment - there are legal terms that define this, usually recalled in the entertainement policies in many large corporations. If you work in such environment, just ask legal department on the appropriate terms.

In your private life, I would say a gift to refuse is something that makes you uncomfortable because of an extravagant value.

I work in the medical field and often our staff receives gifts from patients as a token of appreciation. Usually it's around the holidays so it's something that we can all share. But it is technically unethical to accept a gift from someone if they have been your patient, you can jeopardize your license.

If you feel someone is giving you gifts because they think they are going to get something from you (like a man trying to win you over) don't accept if you're not comfortable.

You can refuse a gift if its too expensive, but Im sure the person who bought it really wanted you to have it. I usually just take it even if I don't want it or its not what I like. You can always return it and buy something you do like.

If you know the person is giving it to you because they want you to feel obligated to them, so they can ask you for a favor. Even if you would do the favor without the gift, accepting it just confirms in their mind that manipulation is how to get what they want. I had this problem with a co-worker. She would bring me some little cheap gift she got at the dollar store or a tag sale for my daughter who was a toddler at the time. I'd say "thank you" and take it and then she'd ask me to cover shifts for her. It got pretty annoying after a while.

Sure. Just make sure it is in pristine condition and take the old card out. Oh, and make sure the gift is going no where near the original gifter. Good luck. I refer you to the Seinfeld show about "Regifting."
