when i go shopping i tend to stick to the same list too but i do watch the food channel to get ideas for dinner... as far as snacks go we like ...brownies with frosting and mini m&ms for chips we buy the variety paks that you put into lunches...then you get more choices other than just dorritoe(we luv those too) then of course there is ice cream...good way to get kids to eat fruit is to mix into the ice cream..(all fruit's work) and then my favorite is sausage roll with cheese and ritz or peanuts. AND TO ANGEL AND ESPECIALLY DICK, SCREW YOU ..I WOULD HATE YOU IF YOU WERE MY PARENT!! OK PEOPLE NO WHERE IN HER QUESTION DID SHE ASK FOR HEALTH SNAKES..FOR GOD'S SAKE READ THE QUESTION AND SHOVE YOUR HEALTH FOODS UP YOUR BUTTS!!

I go with fruit snacks, Goldfish crackers are always a hit with the kids, bananas, apples, watermelon goes over REALLY well, chips for lunches, sometimes cookies, Capri Suns, and popcicles.
I have one kid that will always be a bit heavy, and one kid that could eat nothing but junk and never gain a pound. I found that it's all in moderation. I don't let them eat half a bag of chips with lunch, I don't give them more than a cup of ice cream for dessert, and then I add fresh bananas to it. I just make sure that they learn that eating right, not over doing the junk food, and going outside for some exercise, is a much better way to stay healthy. Although that's become rather difficult since I'm pregnant and crave some serious junk food. "How come you get to eat Ben and Jerry's and I don't?" lol

I usually have a prepared list, based on what meals I plan to cook for the week. I use a form I wrote up on my computer years ago, listing the products I like, with a blank line after each one. Then I printed the list once and had copies made. When the time comes to head out to shop, I go through each room to see if there's anything I need. I also sort out any coupons I have to match with what I want to buy.
Snacks: I love chocolate (too much!), so at least one of the snacks I buy is chocolate pudding. I also enjoy crackers and different sliced cheeses for "browsing" snacks during the day. I have to have some chocolate before going to bed, though. That's my reward for having eaten fairly healthfully the rest of the day!

I do buy those stuffs but on a very minimal level. Maybe because my son is only two years old but I do have nieces and nephews of the same age as your daughter's. I do experiments and new discoveries when it comes to food. I make pizza in an oven toaster, or at least top pancakes with vanilla ice cream or pair yoghurt with nachos and the likes.

sounds very unhealthy....
trplddd: I am simply giving my humble opinion on the types of food she purchases for her 8 year old. I am not forcing her to put the oreo cookie box back onto the shelf and go grab celery sticks and ranch dresing.
Linda d: I sincerly apologize for questioning your authority as a parent, and I, only a teenager. I will say this though, and I hope you will have an open mind as to what I am typing: Weight has absolutely no effect on her artieries that are clogging up. Foods high in fat, sugar, salt, cause clogging of the arteries. By the age of 14 she will be either: obese, diabetic, have completely clogged artieries which leads to heart attacks, or seizures, possibly death. As to your question, my parents buy HEALTHY, organic things like: chedder bunnies, wheat thins, fruits, vegetables, etc. Eating healthy will also improve her thinking, and discipline.
Also, they are not a MUST HAVE, she doesnt absolutely need it...she just WANTS it. And your a fool enough to buy into it, and feed her poison every day. If you truly love your child you wouldn't feed her food that will kill her in 7 years.

I have a 2 year old and i usually buy him applesauce and yogurt.. sometimes he gets cupcakes or swissrolls. I am not too worried about his weight because he is drastically underweight due to brain damage. you do what is right for your daughter. I understand the part she is slender. So don't worry about the junk food. Some people are ignornat on here.

Have you ever heard the statistic that over two thirds of the nation is overweight? Yup, it's true. Even if your children are not overweight this food is not doing them any good. It will make them irratable and cranky.
Here are some ideas of healthy snacks that your children will either enjoy or learn to enjoy!
Carrot Sticks w/ranch
Apples/Celery w/Peanut Butter
Rice Cakes with P.B and cinnamon
Granola Bars
Any fruit (Grapes, Raspberries, Strawberries, Blueberries)
Butterless popcorn or Fat Free carmel apple popcorn.
Lots of water/Gatorade instead of soda or koolaid.
With these new snack ideas you will find that your children will not be too high energy unlike when they eat candy and cookies their blood sugar levels get all messud up and go up down up down. When it is so high up they are high strung and when it is down they get cranky.
The healthy snacks will keep them in between.

I am assuming you don't buy ALL of those things every week.....my budget is too tight to buy many treats. Each week I list the meals I plan to make, the items I need for those meals, dividing them on the list by section of the store, and then put approx. prices next to each item. Add it up, and see if I have anything left. This week I actually squeezed a bag of chips onto the list. My boys get very few snacks between meals. Mostly they walk to their grandmom's house and get an apple.

I tend to buy the same stock items - ie milk, bread, meats, produce, etc... However, I usually allow a few "fun" items or really good sale items. I wait till I have what I need to make meals for the week, then if my budget allows, I get some treats for myself and family.
