They were bred to pull a sled all day and sleep outside in the snow all night.
They are active and like to run. They are escape artists. They can get over under or through a fence faster than you can fix the hole. They shed year round but "blow coat" twice per year and it comes out in big clumps.
They are beautiful dogs but take an active owner who has time to spend with them.

I read a LOT about huskies that I wish I'd done before I let my husband get ours! They're VERY friendly, but like to run (they're bred for it), need a LOT of exercise and socialization. They actually enjoy sleeping in the snow, so don't baby them, but don't just plunk them outside either! They're susceptible to cataracts and other ailments, so getting a Husky-mix is probably better if you want a Northern Breed. They're smart & stubborn, so read up on training.

DON'T get a Husky if you can't give it: lots of affection, energy, consistent training, room to run and socialization w/your human and/or dog "Pack". Also, if you want a "one-person" dog, Huskies aren't the dog for you! They will bond with the entire family, protect and need you...and possibly whomever else is around, including burglars! So, they're not good guard dogs. I wouldn't go by the AKC "rules", unless you want to show...it's mostly about looks! Also...they bark a LOT and that's one habit you'll probably never break them of.

Read, talk to other Husky owners and read some more before letting one of these lovable dogs into your life! I love our Husky, but I wish I'd shipped him off to a family who races sled-dogs in Vermont, before we bonded!

I disagree with the laid back description. My husband got a husky puppy and he was a NUT. CRAZY. He chewed on EVERYTHING, including but not limited to table legs, thought that the spicy, bitter, whatever anti-chew gel we used was a condiment, and tormented our lab. He chased the cats. He was SMART and would figure out how to get what he wanted. His favorite trick was to run in the "way back" of the SUV when I was driving and poop. He NEVER did that to my husband, or when my husband was in the car. He did it to me three separate times. Plus, he was 100% housebroken and would even ring a bell on the door when he had to go out, but he peed on me twice. He made me feel like an idiot. I walked him 3 miles a day, and he was still a spaz. He also pulled on his leash non-stop, but after going through choke collars, harnesses, etc. I finally found that a Halti worked. He calmed down a LOT after turning 2, but he still was a lot of work. I would recommend thinking long and hard about getting a husky.

Hey, I don't think they're laid-back dogs. I have one and he's very active. The first I always have to do before i get to school is to make sure he doesn't go to the backyard or he'll go haywire! Their looks make people think that they're aggressive, but they actually don't. They're gentle & friendly, you know (although they shed a lot). They only a lot of attention, that's all.

I too would disagree about them being laidback. They are high energy dogs that need alot of attention and if raised wrong have the potential to be a problem. If they are the right dog for you though they are awesome, just make sure you know what you are getting into before you purchase one for your self.

In my opinion they are among the high risk dogs. They need to be well socialized w/other dogs , people etc. I would get a pup & raise it with a cat to teach it to be gentle. Keep your hand in its food bowl & plenty of eye contact. So it doesnt become food agressive or dominant. They are a beautiful dog, but like any need lots of love, attention & socialization to become & stay a good dog.

Very laid-back dogs...very good family dogs......Drabacks? They shed like CRAZY!!! In six months you could have enough dog hair to weave yourself another dog.
