By Government you mean the People and programs for the citizens of the USA. The opposite is the private sector which is tyranical, non-demcratic and not subject to the will, needs or desires of the people.
Supposedly this is a great market opportunity, a way to improve one’s personal responsibility by cutting reliance on government spending.
How do you thing the 47 million Americans--the disabled, retired, the poor are supposed to miraculously get income? The foster children, the elders? It is easy for you to say personal responsibility because you are not in need (and I am sure never have been). In the meantime, corporations have been fleeing stock market investments that provide guaranteed income for their workers’ pensions.
In your view market opportunity spurs personal responsibility but in reality it only distorts economic reality.
You really should focus on the corporations who are declaring bankruptcy to avoid personal responsibility with the help of the Government.

Personal responsiblity is when any given individual makes sure they get what's coming to them.
Criminals get booty ...or they get caught.
husbands and wives get along ...or they get divorced.
Mothers and Fathers get the flesh and blood they so long for by their physical union ...and then they get pride or disappointment (but the responsibility for that is mixed in with the responsiblity of the child. If it is not a positive experience the parents still need to own up to the fact that that responsibility is completely their own doing. They chose to reproduce.)
Government is either successful helping people to have the opportunity to be responsible ...or it is not successful and people suffer needlessly. (Both in that country as well as in the rest of the world.)
Ultimately all of us, wether we admit it or not, (know it or don't know it.) are forced to be responsible for the outcome of our lives. There's no getting around it really. You can run but you can't hide. What you experience is your own doing and responsibility.
I take my own medicine here as it has occurred to me that if I am not happy about anything, ultimately it is my responsibilty to change that experience by doing things differently until I am satisfied.
Some people understand this and some do not but in every event, each and every person experiences exactly what they are willing to own and deserve. There are no excuses for anyone or anything. For every action there is a reaction.
This is true for everyone on the planet.
You are what you tolerate.

what are you talking about? People who need government assistance? This government is driving the wedge between rich and poor further and further apart - the middle class is disapearing. We have 1% of Americans so rich they could wipe their butts w/ dollar bills everyday while we got 99% w/ an average income of $30 thousand trying to figure out what they want to buy gas or food. It's BS min wage is not anything anyone can live off of w/ any amount of security. yes there are some people who aren't motivated enough to go to college and sit on welfare for their whole lives when they could be doing something about their situation but there are some people who want to educate themselves who don't have mommy and daddy to help them through college and just need a little hand up till they get themselves to a place where they can support themselves sufficently. My dad's dad left his mom w/ 4 kids and no money - being the oldest he got a job at 12 yrs old and worked all through high school and helped support his family till all the kids were 18 yrs old and he also saved and saved to go to college 8 years after highschool. Wouldn't it have been nice if my grandmother would've had some help from the government so that her 12 yr old could have played sports after school instead of working. He worked hard all his life and never had a real childhood and never complained about it. I'm all for personal responcibility but I'm also for compasion for those w/ less than me. My family lives paycheck to paycheck but I am greatful everyday that we have food electricity and a roof over our heads - I don't complain and I feel for people w/ less than us and I give when I can. So my question for you is: Where is the love?

Long gone. As soon as people had someone else to blame.
But the government is responsibly to the people. Maybe not for the people, though that can be argued. Don't forget the mandate of the federal government to "promote the general Welfare" (Preamble) and the requirement of Congress to "tax and spend" for the general welfare (Article I Section 8).
The trick is finding the balancing between helping people as a society, and enabling people to be dependent on the govt.

That is why we have a welfare state. These people think that the government owes them a living. The government is partially responsible for it's own undoing. They have in the past coddled these people, and they still continue to do so today.

Once our society turned to the victimization of self, and started relying permanently on programs the govt. instated for temporary aid, they believed any problems were always the govt.'s fault. Now that everything is an illness or disability that people have to dwell on instead of overcome, many are content wallowing and moping instead of taking responsibilty for their own direction in life.

Good question. It's the actions of people as a whole that bring about the greatest good for the greatest number of people - not the government.

Everyone is always b*tching and moaning about how the government doesn't do this or that. They really need to get off of their *** and do things for themself, the government does enough!
