She will get used to it. It just may take some time. Pet her and call her name over and over while you're petting her. Even if she gives you a blank stare, just keep doing it over and over day after day. Say her name often when addressing her, especially when showing affection to her. This has worked for me in the past. Consistency and repetition are big keys when working with dogs. Right now, she is still adjusting to her new home and all the new surroundings. Everything is new to her, even her name. There is no telling what all the little thing has been through up til now. As she becomes more secure with her new life, she will adjust to her new name. Just be patient. Eventually she will get it.

You could try clicker training the animal. Also rewarding the dog when it comes to you when you call "doris" they will eventually realize the name means come to you but it will take time especially a part beagle they are off in there own world sometimes.

Yes, she'll get used to it. We always get our dogs from the pound and they eventually learn their new name. Just keep using it and give Doris lots of love.

Yes
We get dogs in our rescue just like that and we give them a name.
Every time you feed her call the name you are going to use and set the food down. When you give a treat call her name and treat.
It will take time but they do learn the new name.

if you call her sweetie or puppy or even Doris when your close to her and pat your leg as you call her......have a treat with you and show it to her and give it to her....keep this up for a few days. soon she will be coming to you when you call her what name you have picked for her.
good luck

Just keep calling her that...give her a treat when calling her that, pet her and call her that. Keep reinforcing positive actions while calling her that name. Sure, she may remember her old name, but she will respond to the new name...all dogs can be taught new tricks...just be patient.

Yeah most dogs will respond to just about any name. my 5 year old responds to, angel, noodles, farfagnuton, pupalupagus, etc. say it in the right tone and they'll figure it out.

since dogs can't learn english (just the tone of your voice) I am voting YES, you can change its name. the naming of a dog is really more for the human than it is for the dog.

start calling her a name and in time she may. If I started and others calling you something in time you would learn to respond to it. Like people at school or work giving you a nickname.
