My cat seems to not be using the litter box these days. Instead, he chooses to use a corner in my basement. Why?

Because he can't reach the ceiling! Seriously, have your cat checked by a vet, and in the meantime, keep the liter box clean and put it in the preferred corner of the basement.

I am a veterinary technician at an all cat practice. There are probably a couple answers to your question. 1) Urinary tract infection-yes they get them too! 2) Crystals in the urine.( Which they get from the food they eat.) This is an individual thing, not every cat has this problem, but diet is a major factor. Symptoms can be alike: Blood in urine, not using litterbox because they associate pain with being in litterbox, urinating on carpets, beds, blankets, piles of clothes. etc. You should take your cat to the vet to see what it is that is causing him or her to do this. 3) Inappropriate Urination is another cause, and medication is available: Prozac, elavil are just a couple. Usually it is just an office call and a urinalysis to determine diagnosis. If infection, a course of antibiotics are usually prescribed. If crystals, then a diet change, with appropriate food is key factor in correcting problem. There are two types of crystals, Struvite (Triple phosphate) and Oxylate. So the crystals decide the food.

there are many reasons a cat will urinate on the floor. i would need more info than what i have. if the litter box isn't changed enough, they may have left there scent in that corner. my suggestion clean the litter box more, use a deodorizer to rid the cat scent from the corner of the basement. if the cat continues to pee on the floor than take it to a vet 'cause it may have a urinary problem

Is your cat fixed? If not, they mark areas as their territory, and they keep going back to the same spot. My cat did the same thing and I poured pepper in the area that he urinated. He stopped going in that spot. It could also be that the litter box is dirtier than what he's comfortable with.

You might want to try putting an additional cat box in the basement spot.

I had the same problem with one of my cats once they pee there they think its ok to keep going there, so try cleaning the the area with a pet odor cleaner found in the cleaning aisle, then put something in the way of that spot or start putting the litter box in that corner?

He is after all, a cat isn't he. He has to pee and the floor happens to be underneath him when he does. The litterbox thing works only after the animal is trained to use it. It wasn't his idea it was yours. Try cleaning that area of the floor with something repellent to the cat and maybe he'll return to the litterbox.

I would NOT put him outside, esp. if he's not used to it. His life span could be VERY short! It could be a # of things, like just changing type of litter, puberty or placement of box. Also, disease. If the box isn't cleaned regularly, that'd do it too. If cleaning doesn't help, take him to the vet.

It might have a medical problem or you just don't clean the litter box often. Try cleaning it everyday and see if that helps.
