OK...don't laugh...but my dog thinks that what's in the cat box is the best dog treat of all time!! I've got an old lab and an old cat...we've been struggling with this problem for years...

I've tried everything. I can't put a cover on the cat box cause then the cat won't go in it. I even tried to put a kitty door in the room where the cat box is...but the cat won't go through the door. She will crap in the floor first...or just sit by the door and meow.

I have punished, spanked, yelled, tried "positive-re-enforcement"just about everything imaginable to the dog to try and get her to stop...but rest assured, as soon as I leave the house..she makes a bee line for the cat box...I've caught her in the act numerous times.

Any Suggstions? I'm tired of my dog's kitty litter moustache!!

We call it rice crispie treats, cuz our dogs have always thought that the litter box was some super snack box.

I've done a couple of things that have worked...
1. A Littermaid cat box. HORRIBLY expensive, but worth it. It scoops the poop for you and puts it in a little box with a lid

2. Put it in a room and put a cat access door into the room, but don't put the flap on the door. My cats wouldn't push open the flap, either, but I took off the flap and put their litter box and their food in the room so they HAD to figure out how to go in and out. Now they think it's fun to peek out and torment the dog.

3. Put the litter box up high, like on top of the washer or dryer.

LOL. I have the same problem. We keep the litter boxes on the front porch and the cats can get to them, but barricade the door so the dogs can't get through.

Also if you have a entertainment cabinet for the tv with sliding doors on the bottom you can stick a litter box in there. I kept a litter box under there until we moved to the new place with the porch. Now I put the cat food under there.

A friend of mine put a cat door into the basement door and the litter box is downstairs.

They make a liguid that you put on your dogs food and it makes the cat waste taste bad to them. one brand is called forbid. If your local pet store does not have it then look at some on line like jeffers. just do a search for pet supplies and you can find all kinds of catalogs and on line shopping. The next thing is to put the box where the dog does not get to it. Had a friend put a chain on the bath room door so that the cats can get in but not the dog. Depending on how active your dog is then a baby gate is what we use for our spaniel to keep here away from the parts of the house w do not want her in.

Have you tried to build a type of open topped box? With a small access 'door' (just an opening) for the kitty to go in. You could build the sides high enough so 'puppy' cant get his nose over it. This is a common enough of a problem that litter box manufacturers have made litter boxes (covered unfortunately might not work in your situation) that have the opening in the top...that dogs cant get into.

You might want to position the opening toward the wall with just enough space to allow cats to enter.Or if you can place litter box in a room with a door that closes, put a cat door on the door to the room.Maybe a chain latch on the door adjusted just enough for the cats to enter. Its kinda gross, but dogs really love the stuff.Good Luck!!!

I took this same question to my vet... and he said.. Oh.. Doggie Bon-bons (yuck). I guess it's like us with a box of chocolate... NOTHING will keep us from our quest!

I had to just be more vigilent about keeping the litter box clean. There are the boxes that do an electronic sweep with each box usage...(which would remove solid material left behind where your dog can't get to it). Do a yahoo search on "SELF CLEANING CAT LITTER BOXES" to see example

By training? IMPOSSIBLE! They think it's gourmet puppy chow.

You have to make a barrier that the cats can get through or over but that stops the dog. Some cats will use a "catwalk" system of boards that no dog can get across.

Yea.. gross. I'm not laughing, my dog thinks cat poop is a treat also. I put my cat litter on my balcony and had a cat door made specially for my window so the dog can't get through it even if he tried. I hope you find a solution soon.
