My youngest child (he's 4 Today!) pees everywhere! - against the car, trees, houses ect...
He is only just potty trained so I dont want to undo any of his training, but should i stop him, or where is appropriate?

It is a phase he is going through. My little boy is also 4 and if we let him he would do ' jungle wee's' all the time. If he wants the toilet when we are out I will find a discreet place for him unless there is a toilet nearby. He did go through a stage of weeing all over the house and in some very strange places including empty baby bath bottles (which I wouldn,t know about until i came to use it !) and his wellies. This i told him was totally unacceptable and was a naughty step offence. Eventually we have overcome it although it did take some time. In the back garden where it is private i do allow him to wee in the corner on some weeds ( mainly because I rember enjoying the freedom of doing that when i was a child ) I grew out of it by the time I was 6/7 I'm sure he will too.

If it makes you feel any better my daughter does the same. The other day she pulled her pants down and squatted for a pee in the park. I picked her up and took her behind a tree to pee. Lets face it their aren't toilets available everywhere you go and a child that has just been potty trained needs to pee fairly quickly. Don't worry just encourage him to be discreet and when there is a toilet to use it.

I guess you know it has taken a little longer to get him potty trained - so criticisms may not be good at this stage.

I do think giving rewards for doing it in the right place may change his behaviour. Make sure you don't laugh or scold when he does it in wrong place - so he gets no attention for it. But really make a fuss when he does it correctly (in the bathroom). Just remind him when he does it "wrong" that it is less treats.

After a while of success or continued potty use - I would then consider telling off if he continues to "offend"! I think it would be useful to establish why he is doing it?? In his head - is he proud??

Happy birthday to the cheeky fella!!

I think he's at the age to be taught that the toilet or potty is the best place to wee. Of course, if he's really caught short, behind a tree is ok, but it's probably best to encourage him to use the toilet. If he really can't hold on, try taking a potty with you wherever you go, you can get collapsible ones that come with potty liners.

This is very typical for small boys - both my sons did it. The 3 year old across the street got completely naked twice last night and peed in his bushes in the front yard. He is just potty trained and is experimenting with it. If he is doing it in public or in the house on the carpet or something, you should try to stop him, but eventually he will get over it.

I have just got out of that stage , I have 2 boys and used to let them pee up trees down drains up walls ,, But once they know they want a wee and can hold it a little longer (as when they are just starting , when they gotta go ,they gotta go) tell him to go to the toilet inside or only if desperate, find an isolated place when out ,and tell him he shouldn't do this often, it is private going for a wee , I hope it helps ,in time he will understand and only want a toilet or if really desperate find somewhere quiet, you don't who's lurking or watching.

Okay, relax John M, it's just a kid peeing outside, damn, he's not building a bomb in the basement. I think that you should just let him know that big boys pee in the toilet. He has to learn how to hold it, because it sounds like he just goes as soon as the urge hits him. It's probably just a phase, something new and exciting for him, he's a boy, he can do that. Hell, sometimes I wish I could do it!

Just a thought .... but try ripping up pieces of toilet paper and throwing it in the toilet for him to hit as a target. This is a great trick for helping boys learn to aim when peeing. Hopefully he'll like the game enough to want to save his pee for the toilet.

Give it a try, it might work
