My son is eight years old and always looking for ways to make money. Do you think he is old enough to be mowing our yard, with supervision of course?

thats the best way to learn is by doing, also i think its cool that your son is trying to make money hes trying to tell you that hes wants to earn his keep sort of speak and you as a parent should be proud of him. by all means let him mow the lawn and when he gets done reward him give him a couple of dollors and a cold pepsi.

Is your son mature enough for such a job?
If you want him to try such a thing as mowing at 8 years old then I suggest you supervise him very closely to see just how he does act while mowing.
Don't just supervise only once or twice but for a whole month because if he knows you'll not be watching after a few times he won't goof off right away if he's going to later but knowing you'll be there will either make or break his idea of mowing.
Eight is young for mowing but if you are there to watch then he just might be able to handle it.
You're the only person to judge if he'll be able to do the job so watch him while he does it the first time while you walk beside him, he wants to show you that he's grown up and wants you to be proud of him for helping out too.
Good boy there, be careful and let him try it, ok.

My son turned 12 in Jan. So this summer he started mowing the lawn. I don't think it really has anything to do with age. I think it has more to do with how mature is your son in handling the responsibility. He should be shown how and where the gas goes, how to check the oil, and how to clean it when the job is done. keep in mind that he probably won't do that great of a job the first few times. It might take some time with you explaining that next time he mows to make sure that he gets this spot or that area etc.. I have my son mow every Sunday after church and things go and look pretty good. Good luck with your son.

If you work with him, I see no problem. Some eight year olds are more mature than others. He needs to know safety, not just how to push or ride a mower.

I think it is good for a child to start early in learning tasks or chores that will mold who they become. Earning money is a good incentive to continue doing chores, but I would not have every chore he does require payment. Cleaning his room for instance should be a requirement regardless of money given for it.

Is this with a ride-on mower or a hand controlled mower?

If it is a ride on, can he reach the pedals safely ?

If it is hand controlled can he use the controls safely

Is he sensible and will instantly respond to "STOP"

Will he wear sensible shoes and not trainers, and be prepared to wear eye protection in windy weather

These questions and more you should think about, remember if he gets hurt YOU are responsible to the law and to the hospital.

Other than that a sensible 8 year old should be encouraged to become self reliant and attempt these things.

About 9 years, but you should teach him properly so that he can not hurt him.I also think he is too young for that, but if he is willing to take care of him self,of course he can mow the grass!
