Muscular tension or knots can be treated by doing a few different things. MASSAGE! Getting a massage by a qualified therapist can increase circulation, ease stress and re balance your muscles. Deeper tissue massage when done properly can increase range of motion, ease chronic pain, and relax muscles. The pain relief is tremendous, it may take a few sessions before you notice long term results. However, you must also reduce stress, and I recommend seeing a qualified chiropractor. If the "knots" and pain have a root cause like vertebral subluxation(vertebrae misaligned) then massage or anything else will only provide temporary relief. I'm a massage therapist and most of my clients come to me for chronic pain and finally find the relief they were looking for.

I presume these are knots in the muscles? Then the best thing to do is to stretch. Muscles know when they are overworked or kept tense for too long, so stretching is the most likely way to take care of this problem. Just gently tip your head, or lengthen your back, and hold for 15 to 30 seconds, relax a couple of seconds and repeat. Warmth or a nice, hot bath also helps, as it tends to loosen and relax those muscles, too.
If this is particular to the neural plexus between the shoulderblades, try gently pulling one arm at a time across the body in front--hold 15-20 seconds and release. Or try putting one bent arm above your head and gently stretching the tricep by pulling on the elbow. Also, working the muscles helps--especially in the female, who tend to store their tension in their shoulders or central back. After you have gotten some relief from stretching, take a nap. That gives the muscles time to get into their new relaxed mode.

Good question. I have them as well and agree that massage is the best treatment I've found so far. Having kids walk on my back and having them dig their elbows into my back has helped a bit. A really hot bath for several hours provides a bit of relief. I also push into corners of walls. I've also taken Ibuprofen. None of it other than a really good professional massage does the trick.

Go to a massage therapist, silly. If you can't- get a friend to massage you. Or soak in warm water. Or buy a massager. Mine is good- it was about 25 bucks and does help my neck and back. Seriously. Try these things.

A good massage usally does the trick. Lying down a completely flat surface (think the floor) helps loosen up your back as well.
If you have children, or small kids around, have them walk on your back.
