GO to the VET!

2006-09-02 06:20:52 · answer #1 · answered by Anonymous · 3 0

Go to the vet, since the kitten is only 2 weeks old. Take the mother, too, and any other kittens. The vet will be able to help. You may want to spray bomb your place for fleas while you are at the vet, so there will be no fleas when you get back. Spray bomb again in about 7 days, to make sure no eggs made it out of your first spray bomb. When the cat or dog is older, you can use a small amount of liquid peppermint castille soap, which kills fleas and eggs instantly, believe it or not, but I don't know if a 2 week old kitten can handle soaps very well.

This kitten is TWO WEEKS old? Is it an orphan you're feeding on a bottle? If it's not an orphan, get it back to its mother immediately until it's at least 6-7 weeks.

For the fleas, get the kitten to the vet - they have flea remedies for small kittens. Do it fast - a flea infestation can kill a kitten. Remember, fleas drink blood, kittens are tiny, and enough fleas can drink enough blood to give the kitten anemia, and they can die.

Wash out a spray bottle and fill it with rubbing alcohol,( the kind you have in your medicine cabinet).
You can spray this on the kitten without poisoning it.
DO NOT get it in the kittens face or on the private areas as it will burn then.(If you accidently do...then IMMEDIATELY run water on the area!)
Alcohol kills fleas on contact.
You can put alittle on a cotton ball, Q-tip or your fingertips and rub down the ears and under the chin.
Afterwards Take a washcloth with warm water on it (NO SOAP) and wash off as much of the alcohol as you can.
Then you want to take a dry towel & rub it on the fur to dry off as much as you can.
I have always done this with my kittens because ALL of the flea products that I tried always made them foam at the mouth because it was poisoning them.(Even the products made for kittens will still cause this effect!)
The alcohol also kills cochroaches on contact and it is much better to use in the bathroom and kitchen area than Raid or other poisons are.
Also to reduce fleas in the future you can put the kitten in the bathroom and spray a water-based roach killer on the carpet and furniture to kill fleas...(just a light mist, but you must cover the entire areas).
Be sure to change the kitten's bedding and DO NOT get any roach killer near the clean bedding. (ALLOW THE ENTIRE ARE TO DRY AND VACUUM VERY WELL BEFORE PUTTING THE CLEAN BEDDING AND KITTEN BACK INTO THE AREA).
Repeat this in two weeks to kill the eggs that hatch.
(I use BLACKFLAG....Raid bothers my upper respitory system and DON'T use HOTSHOT because it doesn't kill anything!)
Just remember that the alcohol must not get into the kittys eyes, mouth or private areas and you should be flea free shortly.
P.S. I once put a flea collar on a kitten and the kitten acting like it was dry-heaving and couldn't eat or drink...When I took it to the vet the first thing he did was cut off the collar and told me to NEVER put a flea collar on any cat because most ALL cats are allergic to them.
My cat was treated for the allergic reaction...and the problem with the eating and drinking is that the cat's throat had been swelling inside from the reaction and it would have been fatal!
****The only other thing that you can do is to actually sit down with a bowl of water and pick off each and every flea and immediatly put it in the water. (Fleas will drown).
With the kitten being sooo young; I would prefer this method as not to chance making the kitten ill.
And vacuum ALOT and keep clean bedding in the area.
Good Luck!

give the kitten a bath in warm water. use a fine comb and rubbing alchol to comb the flea out of it fur. Avoid the face area. You must also do something about the fleas around where the kitten is. Sweep, mop, vacuum and clean. Don't give the kitten a bath more than every other day at the most and make sure the water is right around the temp of the kitten around 100 degrees. Use puppy shampoo dog shampoo or dish liquid will dry it's skin out.

I had this problem with some kittens born in my backyard. I took them into the house to start taming them, but they were totally covered with fleas! There's no over-the-counter product that you can use on kittens that young. With my kittens, I had to go to the veterinarian's office and get some special stuff that was safe to use on kittens as young as 2 weeks old. I'm sorry, I don't remember the name of it. But go to your local vet, they should be able to help you.

Also, I suggest using as little as possible of the flea foam to get rid of the fleas. Even though the product may be used on kittens as young as 2 weeks, it's still full of toxic stuff (to kill the fleas!) and 2-week-old kittens are still pretty fragile. Start out with really small amounts so as to not overload your kittens with too much toxic stuff.

Good luck!

only 2 weeks old?? that is too young 4 any flea dip or anything else really. u should go to ur vet and get that special stuff 4 young kittens. one thing that does work well on older cats if u don't have flea dip or spray is give them a bath in dawn dishsoap. it may take more than one time if the infestation is bad. but it does work. every rescue kitty i have ...i bathed it in dawn dish soap . good luck with the baby!

You need to ask the vet what would be safe to use. It is very important that you get rid of the fleas on the kitten or he could get anemic and die from the fleas. Good luck.

That's pretty young for a flea dip/bath. Contact your veterinarian for advice. When I was a kid and our cats had fleas, my mom would take cotton pads and go all over the flea-ridden areas with rubbing alcohol (not sure that's such a good idea today because the kitten might start licking herself and get sick).

you need to bathe her in warm water and drown the fleas becareful though because when you immerse her body into the bath the fleas will tend to run towards her face and ears so you will need to use a washcloth for these areas..unfortunately this is all you can do at 2wks old you cannot use any flea medications or flea collars at this age!!!

Try a flea & tick shampoo. You can get in supermkt or pet store. Since it's a kitten he/she will be more open to the water/taking a bath. My daughter-in-law had to do this once w/ kittens. Also, get a flea & tick smoke bomb (e.g. Black Flag, Raid) and use this for your house. You may need 1 for each room. Follow the instructions carefully.
