I will be moving from NY to FT. Campell in a few weeks. My bf is in the army and we will be living off bas in an apt. I have never been to Tn and I was wondering if any one can give me some info on the base itself and the surrounding area of Clarksville. What were your experiences? Thanks!

I live a few hours from there and was stationed there a long time ago. Clarksville is very nice and just an hour from Nashville. To the other answer Ft. Campbell headquarters is in KY but the majority of the base is in TN and so is off base housing for the most part.

I'd like to help but the last time I was at Fort Campbell was in the spring of 1956, ( that would be fifty years ago). We lived in Clarksville and it was a nice little town but definitely "country".

I imagine there have been some improvements made by this time. On average, most military-base towns eventually get enough money to make some improvements.

Clarksville is nice for the culture; but a nice place to rent, you'll have to search hard.

Guthrie and Herndon, Kentucky are very pleasant, very quiet, no crime practically. Clarksville, you have many areas troubled, some are even "off limits" by order of the Post Commander. Make sure you get the "off limits" list before you start looking. It will save you a lot of grief.

We lived in Herndon. Our neighbours were Amish. We had no worries about thugs, drug dealers, addicts, burglars, or anything of that sort. My commute time to post was 15 min. average. No traffic. Best kept secret of the off post soldiers.

Only off side to that is we could hear the artillery practice. I felt sorry for Lafayette (a small town very close to the ranges).

Guthrie would be the ideal, I think.

You might consider Hopkinsville, but for as far as it is, it's also got more crime than I care for.

GREAT BASE, You have nothing to worry about, BUT DO MARRY BOYFRIEND SOON SINCE YOU ARE LEAPING IN THE DIRECTION OF A WIFE, You want to reap all benefits a spouse can receive that's ALL BENEFITS that one can not Receive being just a girl friend. I am located here in Nashville,Tennessee, very close to the direction that you are heading. AND A military wife of Ex-Husband and now Wife of a Military ex-boyfriend. If you guys have children together you NEED TO BE THE WIFE BY LEGALLY HAVING HIS LAST NAME. Hope you have a SAFE TRIP HERE, take care

the fact that you've never been to Tennessee won't really come into play here, as Ft Campbell is in Kentucky.
