I agree totally. But when it comes to $$, gasoline is where it has been and the oil bigwigs have a huge impact on what goes on the market and what doesn't. The only thing left is the choice of the consumer to take a stand and stop buying and/or driving those huge SUVs and settle for something more compact and economical like Teslas. I can't afford one yet and although my Honda Civic is fuel efficient, I gave that up to ride my bycicle. And it strikes me funny as I ride to school, I see so many SUVs on the road that are deigned to carry as many as 12 people...and only the driver is there with the A/C on full blast!! What will strike me silly later is that those people that made those choices are the ones that will act like the victims when $hit is really hitting the ecological fan.. I liked this post, thanks :)

First off the GM electrics were just leased to people who could drive them just like GM wanted the car driven. There was some electrical fires where the recharging bar went into the hood, The thinking is to have a fuel cell platform with all the electrical and motors and bolt on various body styles on top. GM showed a couple years ago. The IMPULSE was very limited range between recharges when the A/C had to be used. Until then people are getting suckered in buying a hybrid car with expensive battery's that wear out. Hybrid has allowed the manufacture to learn about electric motor drive and motor controls. We just need fuel cell that runs on urine.Piss cars into the future!

Sales were NOT good! Not a single one of those vehicles was ever sold. They were only leased.
GM did NOT decide to kill the project. They never intended it to run any longer than it did. It was done as a proof of concept, to gather real-world usage data that could be used for future development. GM quite plainly stated this from the very beginning and limited leases to people living in urban areas who did not drive too many miles each day. As such, it was a successful test project. If nothing else, it proved that current battery technology is nowhere near what is needed to make a pure electric vehicle practical.
Most electric vehicles do NOT significantly reduce total pollution. They only move the source of the pollution from one place to another. The vehicle itself may not release much direct pollution, but the power plant that ultimately recharges the batteries probably does -- sometimes MUCH more than a modern gasoline powered vehicle does.

Those cars Were sold for around 30k but they cost Gm much more to make. At the time the EPA had made a requirement of the major auto manufactures to start producing ZEVs(zero emission vehicles). I forget the numbers, but they had great plans of 2% of all cars sold were to be ZEV's. This was supposed to be in the late 90s and by now i think it would have been 10%. Seems like the big 3 just flexed their muscles and the EPA backed down.
