First bring in a large trash can and boxes or laundry baskets and sort everything. Make one basket for laundry, shoes, and anything else that has to do with attire, one for paperwork books magazines you wish to keep, one for beauty and health item, and another for whatever other category you wish. As you sort judge each item and unless you have a sure need for an item throw it away right there and then so that you won't have to deal with it in the future. Take the baskets where ever those items go. For instance the beauty and health things go to the bathroom, the laundry and attire basket go to the bedroom. Remove the items for the basket in the rooms the will be placed in and as you do this judge each item again as to whether or not you really need those item and thin out and throw away more. Try to work fast because once you get on a roll it's easier. Try not to think too much about each item as you sort or you will justify keeping things you really have no use for.

I'd say start with going through old papers. Those take up more room than you can imagine. Just take out a weekend to do it, don't plan anything else (This long weekend might be good) and dedicate yourself to it. A great impulse is to but something that you'll need to de-clutter for. if you have a lot of books laying around, buy a bookself. You'll have to move stuff out of that area, and see which books you want or don't want.

Start with one room, like the bathroom clean it completely, combine shampoos etc,. Throw out all the products you dont use. You are paying store trash. Think of it that way, then you dont feel so bad chunking stuff. I work from the back of the house forward. I put all of my shower/bath needs in a caddy. Towels , toilet paper, dental stuffs, and that caddy is all you need in the bathroom.

Go to flylady.com. Subscribe to her newsletter or just read her tips. I've been trying to incorporate some of them in my life. Today I took a bag of trash, TWO bags of purses and a bag of clothes out of one closet. The non-trash items will go to a friend who can do w/them as she pleases. Work on a small areas at a time otherwise you will get burned out.

Take all the stuff that you've been hoarding like a packrat, take out the sentimental value stuff, and hold a rummage sale..
Make some money and take yourself out to dinner and the theater..
