i have a coworker that keeps on telling people that she's taking medication for depression, and makes her illness an excuse for some instances, she gets her way with things because she "acts" like she's very sick or people or "bullying" her, so that makes me think that she might not have any illness at all....what do you think?

it depend's on the person, but maybe she could be trying to call out for a bit of help, or she just want's someone to love her, with out knowing how much she get's to people, people like this, u just hve to be carefull of, cause if she is a sick person, then u will need to support her when she open's up to you, but never fill sorry for her cause she may only play on it, when it comes to her work, hope this has helped, i no a lot about it,

I would hope she is not using it for gains; depression is a serious illness. She may feel alone and frightened if she has just started medication and is experiencing some side effects. Some people need to be closely monitered when starting medication and often have to try several types before they see results. She may be scared of what the medication might do to her and telling people that she is depressed and being medicated may be her way of feeling secure in an unknown situation. But depression really isn't something that people who have it would brag about.

I dont know to many ppl who would brag about it. If she is out for attention, then she would say and do several things. If she is taking the right medication, then her "illness" shouldnt be a problem. She may not be taking them, and if she has other mental issues she could be acting them out at work for pity. I would just try to avoid her. If it's not possible, find a way to talk to her. Without offending her, unless its outside of work. Good luck

I think someone who really truly has depression wouldn't be very likely to announce it to the world. It sounds to me like this person is using her "illness" to get out of doing work. That is a real shame because there are people who really struggle with depression on a daily basis. It sounds like she is hiding behind it. It is hard to know if she has depression or not, but I don't know anyone who has depression and who brags about it. Most people (that I know) are embarrassed about it and try to hide it.

no and not at work most are not happy they have a problem
she may be depressed somewhat and a lot of people take meds for depression
but most with major depression will not use it for sympathy or to blame and only tell a very close co-worker as someone to talk to about the screw-ups at work and not for pity

AHHH BUT I WILL SAY PEOPLE DO LIE ABOUT BEING SICK AND ANY ILLNESS

People make up that stuff so others will feel sorry for them. It's the only way some people have of getting any attention.

It sounds like she is using her illness as an excuse to get attention and other things as well. Alot of my old patients have attention seeking behavior with their diagnoses of depression. I would steer clear of her to avoid being trapped in her cycle.

normally depressed people won't brag about it. this sounds like she wants a crutch. she's doing it for the attention and to get stuff done for her.

She is manipulative but depressed? Probably not. But does she have an unsound psyche? Yes.
