Which god are you speaking of? If you mean the god of the bible, then that is the source, which is supposedly infallible. That particular god is represented as a confused mess of human attributes who, amongst other things, is jealous, angry and vengeful, particularly in the old testament.
A god who toys with his own creation, condemning all for the actions of a few; a god who offers eternal torment for finite transgression; a god who allows his nemesis to kill innocents to win a stupid wager; a god who commits mass genocide because things aren't going his way (forget the inconsistency inherent in such a proposal); a god who orders his followers to wage war upon their neighbours, to murder women and children, and offers protection for those who engage in such heinous acts; a god who punishes the innocent children of his enemies instead of the enemies themselves; a god who makes a murderer his messenger rather than punish him; a god who offers false ultimatums, ensuring that the outcome will work to his advantage, subverting the free will of his enemies so that the most horrible judgements can be wrought against them.
And so on...
Simply because there are passages which speak of love and compassion, it does not make the parts which contradict such a message disappear, or render them irrelevent when weighing up the information. Picking out the good and ignoring the bad is to be wilfully ignorant.

The Hebrew Scriptures certainly portray a God who advocates genocide, sexual slavery, land-grabbing, and in at least one case - children eaten by a bear.
Not such a kind loving God in those days.

Well its simple, people try to rationalize God thru their own limited ignorant views. They are justifying an entity that goes so far over their heads its funny how so many people come up with idea's of who or what God is. Just remember one thing, let those people live in the bubble of their ignorant minds because a close mind is a dead mind. Those people will spend a life time thinking they know, when they don;t know a damnthing.
PS. its funny how peoples minds can trick themselves into thinking they right when all they've proved is how ignorant they are.

Well, his Press Agents in the Old Testament portray him that way (Deuteronomy 28:15069, for example), so if you want to hold on to a concept of a good, kind and compassionate Supreme Being, you need to abandon the Bible. Many people have. They're called Deists.

I had a roommate in the Army. He told the story of a friend, a US troop in Africa (this was several years ago now), who was on a convoy being chased by starving young children. Apparently these children would try to steal things from the US troops, and the soldiers were annoyed and tired of them. One boy who was chasing along the side of the truck reached up, and the soldier grabbed his arm and ripped it off. Nobody cared, I seem to remember they thought it was funny. Starving children having their arms ripped off. That's why people harbor harsh feeling to god. If a god let this happen then I'll see him in hell.

Read the Bible! All these people say, "oh, the Bible is true", and "it says this in the Bible, so it must be true", and then when they are asked why the Bible says that God unleashed plagues upon people, punished Adam and Eve severely for disobeying him, flooded the earth and killed everyone except Noah and his family and critters, and why every transgression in the Bible is punishable by death, then all of a sudden you can't take it literally.

People assume God is evil because of the extremists, dating back as far as I can remember people have sacrificed human lives to God, Depending on your religion different views and beliefs can cause people to lose touch with the true point of religion and take it to extremes

Because they've been taught, or have believed, all their lives that we have to please God by doing stuff. They think that if they're good enough, or get enough brownie points, they can earn their way to Heaven. And deep down, we all know that we're not good enough and can't do enough good stuff.
People need to realize that it's not about what we do and can do that pleases God. "For it is by grace you have been saved, not works, that no one can boast." Ephesians 2:8 It's all about what Jesus did on the cross by shedding His blood to pay for our sins.

They were taught that.
They were told that.
God worship has had a lot to do with human sacrifice throughout time.
If you read the old testament, you see that there was a lot of whacking.
Even in your own life, whacking is understood very well.
That there was demand.
That the law, the ten commandments.
THOU SHALT NOT___
Don't you think that this was a dictate????
I think so.
