it means to check it at 40 mins to see if its hot, and if not then go for the additional, just not more than 45

I wuz just going to say ... take it out at 40 mins ... if it looks ready and it tastes great, then its done!

(You can do them quicker in the microwave but the top never gets crispy ... they are also devilish easy to make with a bit of half-price mince from Tescos, a tin of tomatoes, some peas, onions, garlic and maybe carrots or swede, an oxo cube, a teaspoon of dried herbs and the mashed potato to cover.)

recipes usually give an approximate time due to different circumstances (ex: different ovens, different altitudes)...check it at 40 minutes and if it looks like it needs a few more minutes, then you'll know it'll need 45 minutes then and for in the future.

Um i think you should just look if it looks like its finished during the 40-45 minute period and take it out then.

Check it at 40 minutes and if it doesn't look ready, cook it longer.

it depends a lot on your oven....if it looks ready take it out........if not dont be afraid to leave it in longer..........in some cases even longer than the recipe states
