Why do people buy Bungalows, and then add loft conversions. If they want stairs, then why not buy a house.(Not a serious question, just one of them wimsical things my hubby thought of).

Because older folk want everything on one level but still an extra room for family to stay in.

I know what you mean though.

I bought a bungalow but wanted a house. The trouble is I live in a very rural area where planning permission for houses is not allowed (well I think this silly rule is beginning to change) I do not like living in a bungalow for many reasons, the main ones being, that I love to go upstairs to bed and also I think it is healthy to use stairs. There is an assumtion that old people like bungalows (I am not old yet) because it is easier to manage without stairs as they get older - I think bungalows cause health problems for this reason. So having told you this - I would love to add a loft conversion if I had the money for the reasons already stated - and - then I would be able to see the view of the lovely countryside from the upsatirs windows. Lets hope that planners in rural areas will soon allow houses to be built instead of ugly stupid bungalows - I hate them!

More to the point, why do they call them bungalows. I'll tell you, A brick layer said to his Foreman that he had run out of bricks and has only built the ground floor, and he said " don't worry bung a low roof on it then" hence Bungalow

Maybe they have to get a bungalow because it's all they can afford at the time.

Very true, a bungalow got its name by a chap who was building a house and ran short of bricks he said bung-a-low roof on it

maybe they really wanted a house but couldnt' afford it. Maybe they needed to do some extra exercise. Maybe they just missed running up and down stairs all day. Or maybe the husband needed somewhere to escape from the wife.
Who knows>?
