Cats always hiss when they are introduced to another cat which has invaded their territory, then they try their best to avoid the other cat that has invaded, or watch intently from an area outside the immediate area of the new cat to see what the new cat will do. I had a problem like this a while back, and found that having a separate litter box for the kittens helped until they were comfortable being around each other. If your older cat has always been in the basement of your house and just came up for attention, then you may want to keep it that way for the older cat, but if she started going to the basement to hide, let her do it until she feels comfortable walking through the house with the kittens, and coax her upstairs to eat, snack and drink. It could be that the older cat was abused in a previous home, or that the presence of kittens reminds her of the life she had before you adopted her (you said you rescued her). She may have even had a litter of kittens that she lost before you got her, and is rejecting these kittens because she remembers she had some, at one point.
Maybe some special treats for the older cat will make her feel better, like Pounce treats or a catnip toy. Again, if they are all using the same litter box, I would definitely change the arrangement, because Alpha Cat may not like sharing the litter box with the kittens. If the older cat does not cover her droppings when she is done in the litter box, sharing the box is likely a problem for the cat.

Like people are saying, it just takes time. The older cat will gradually get used to the kittens. It may be too that the older cat doesn't like kittens or doesn't know what they are. As they grow, she'll realize that they're cats like her and not some weird little creatures that invaded. I've got two kittens that are getting bigger now. At first the older cat hissed and fussed, but now they're all friends. It just took patience.

And you're going in the right direction to give the older cat a lot of attention. Ignore the kittens when the older cat's around.

Be nice to the old cat. Don't let her hide all the time, though. Get her out and pet her (or whatever she likes) in the presence of the kittens, but don't force direct interaction. Also get some "feliway" spray and spray it around the house. This is a comforting smell for cats and calms them down. She will eventually get used to the kittens and even like them, but it may take a while.

Go to www.littlebigcat.com and click on SpiritEssences.com. Dr Jean Hovfe has several essences there under behavior, read them and see what would match up with your older cat. There are things like Stress Stopper, New Beginnings etc. I think you can email Dr. Hovfe at jean@spiritessences.com and she may get back to you on which one would be best.

These are just small bottles. They cost $16.95, no shipping, handling or taxes. Directions for use are mailed with the bottle. You just shake the bottle and put three to four drops on the cat's fur between her ears. Three or four times a day to start for about a week or ten days. Then you can taper off.

You can't do it any cheaper or simpler and it WILL help your older cat adjust.

you have two options.
1) get rid of the kittens and explain to you kids you don't want to hurt the other cat, so they will have to wait untill your cat is gone to get new ones.
2)wait about 2 months to see if she adjusts. Only problem here is if she doesn't you will have two kittens that you have to find homes for and that won't be easy due to them being older.

good luck

You have to introduce new cats into the home slowly... There is sent glads on a cats face just before the ear on the cheek. You need to pet the new cat then rub the scent unto the older cat until it gets use to the scent. and visa verse.. No wonder shes pissed. ! you have replaced her. !

Time. Plus pay special attention to the older cat so she knows she still has first place in your heart.

These new kits are invading her territirory - imagine how you would feel if some lil kids moved in to your home, invading your privacy, making lots of noise!! Give her time - she'll hiss and spit to show them whose boss, but no doubt eventually acept that they're here to stay. I had this with a grumpy house rabbit when we got a dog! I wouldn't call them buddies now - but they endure one another!

Just give her time and space. In time, she'll get used to the kittens. Especially as they get older and a little less irritating to her.

It takes time. Also you have to let your older resident know she is and always be queen be. There are web sites for this because it is lengthy to explain, also vets can give you great advice and maybe a booklet. It will help, just give her time and don't trust her not to kill one of them. Be careful with this.
