Your breed of dog depends on your plans for the dog. Will this dog be around children? If so a lot of small breeds are not recommended. Beagles tend to be good around children but quite hyper as pups. Basset Hounds are great with children and tend to be more lazy. You also need to think of whether you are looking for a long or short coated dog. Are allergies an issue? If allergies are an issue and you aren't worried about children I would suggest a poodle. There are many breeds of small dogs and all can be great dogs in the hands of someone who has done their research. Talk to someone at your local Kennel Club, tell them what you are looking for in a dog and they will recommend some great breeds for you. They will probably even recommend a breeder or 2 to get you started on your research as to where to get the breed you decide on.

I see lots of answers recommending Beagles. Although they are cute, they are very loud dogs. My neighbors behind me breed Beagles and they howl, cry and bark all day. I have a minature dachshund (both my mom and dad have two each) and all are very well behaved, cuddly, loyal pets. I guess it depends on what you are looking for (i.e. active, loud, snuggly, etc.) Good luck in your search!!!

beagles are nice dogs to have but some are pretty big. and they need a lot of exercise. pomeranians are very nice dogs to have but they are pretty expensive. same as maltese. they are very very good to have but pure breds are pretty expensive.
so I would say out of those dogs I would get either a maltese or pomeranians for you apt.

Jack Russell Terrier. There little dogs that are very smart. I know some really smart ones. If you were to get one, I would get a girl. Girls seem easier to deal with.

Many small breeds are good (I have an Eskipoo -- part toy poodle and part American Eskimo). Since small breeds often tend to be nervous and yappy, I think it's important to get one that's fairly young (mine was 8 weeks) and make sure to socialize it thoroughly (used to people, loud noises, etc.).
