Wow, good question... I never would ahve thought of what could possibly, happen, but now.... well, you've got me thinking.

It would be hard, I think , for Christianity to take- after all, the Bible makes it seem as if we are the only sentient beings out there. it would seem to me, that Intelligent lifeforms from 'out there' would severly shake the foundations of Christianity- just think, if God is the Creator of all, and he loves us so much that he supposedly made only us, and then gave us his only begotten son, what would that do? Another lifeform,- it's shape could be any form, really, but that it would have intellignece similar to ours- if God created everything, then he would have had to have created these other intelligent craetures- which would no longer make us his Special children. I think that it might possibly kill a good deal of religions out there. But who knows? If they are sentient, then there is a good chance that they have Creator stories as well, so really... wow, you'll have me thinking on this one for a while! Thanks!

I see no such thing possible as mentioned in the Bible, so I would have to say it would be a serious blow.

But if many thousands disappear at one moment of time, from around the world, and the excuse is that they were taken by aliens, then I say that the Bible is correct.
Why? Because there will be no other real evidence of aliens, just the disappearances. This is what is called the rapture (that word is not in the Bible, but explains the event). A check of those missing will show that most were Christian and young children (some who disappear may not be know as a Christian - a new convert - and many who called themselves Christian will be left behind because they were not being a Christian).

I don't think it would be a problem. Christians have considered the implications of intelligent, non-human creatures before. If you check out "City of God" by St Augustine (written around 400 AD) he talks about this very issue.

In Augustine's time people weren't thinking of space aliens, but for various reasons they thought other weird creatures lived in far off parts of the world (basically China and Africa and other places that Mediterraenean people had never explored). For example many people believed in the existence of cynocepheli - creatures with the body of a human and the head of the dog.

Augustine says that cynocepheli aren't humans but if they have rational souls (i.e., they're intelligent in the same way people are), then cynocepheli could be baptized and become members of the Church.

If someday intelligent aliens are discovered, the Catholic Church at least could apply Augustine's views on the matter. If the aliens are intelligent in the way humans are, if they can understand religion, if they are capable of sin (and thus need redemption) then these aliens could be baptized and become Christians.

Nothing happens to Christianity. Why would you think something would happen to it? God knows what He is doing. The Race of Man fell, maybe the only race in the Universe... Maybe intelligent life from another planet would wonder why you wouldn't take God's Gift?

Look at it from our side . When the Europeans came to the New world, they didn't ask if the Natives beleived in God. They simply ASSUMED that these people were some blood thirsty savages and needed saving. So by force, they were converted to Christianity and forbidden from even speaking their own native languages because God forbid, they might go back to their "evil" ways. IF by some great chance we as a race should ever make first contact,PLEASE don't assume that beings from another planet don't beleive in a diety of some sort and try to force ours on them.

You only focus on Christianity? (once more)

"Intelligent life on another planet, what happens to religions if we meet them?"

Nothing special: religions worked hard not to be disturbed by any change. They are built this way.

But lots of sects would rise. Collective suicides sometimes. "End of the World" syndrom for apocalyptic fanatics.

some persons are so guilible its difficult to sense. Illuminati, Knights Templar, Bible. If I gave you The Lord of the jewellery with the help of ability of Tolkien and recommended you it became into as quickly as certainty, would desire to you sense it? If no longer, why no longer? that's in basic terms as conceivable through fact the rest. Magic, miracles, conspiracies. maybe in 2000 yrs somebody will declare that The Hobbit proves that The Lord of the jewellery somewhat surpassed off.

I honestly don't think it would affect christianity at all. I don't think it would change because a lot of christians would just see it as yes this is the work of God and that is it. It would tend to reinforce their beliefs not negate them.

I believe Nothing will change. God is the same throughout His creation. He doesn't change identity from one planet to another.
