Neither, because a chicken (as we know it today) slowly evolved from previous life, and it's eggs follwed suit.
There is no first, because the line between Chickens and it's genetic ancestors is not that distinct, since species are defined by the ability to procreate. Also, today's chickens are very slightly genetically different then chicken's from 1000 years ago and future chickens, so you'd have to define more closely what you mean by chicken.

Evelutionists say the egg and Creationists say the chicken the right answer is the chicken because God made the chicken and the chicken had the egg,how could the egg come first if a chick can't be born if the ckicken (the mother)didn't keep it warm.If the egg came first, then there wouldn't be any chickens. If you really think about it then you can see that evelution proves itself wrong over and over again.

The egg. A subspecies arose after a mutation that gave the chick an advantage over the other members of the nest and it was better able to survive and reproduce passing on those genes which created a ground dwelling wild fowl. Later the wild fowl were domesticated to produce more eggs. Mankind mated the chickens that produced the most eggs and ate the ones that didn't. Eventually they bred for color, size, flavor, and we have the variety of domestic chickens today. The Genesis fairy tale does not explain all the fossils out there that are intermediary species and domestic animals were not created out of the air but as genetically "engineered" for desired traits. Dogs came from wolves, Horses from the wild asian horses, etc Dogs were the first domesticated animal.

Which came first - the chicken or the egg? "The chicken" came first - in the sentence of the question. If the question is phrased differently, the answer is different.
Reframing the question
It could be said that the question simply requires one to know the context. Most people thinking of the question automatically think of the timeline and it is in this manner that both the previous evolutionary theory and religious teachings contexts arise. Other potential contexts are:
* Having looked through a dictionary from front to back, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?
* When you walked through the supermarket, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?
* When reading the menu, which came first? - the chicken or the egg?

Hmmmm...
Well, Chickens have evolved from something so I would go with egg. Although the process of the species of chicken would take several generations each becoming a slightly different species. The last mutation we would classify as being a chicken would have come from mutation in a newborn.
So the answer would be Egg.

according to evolution the egg must come first. as the bird that would be the chicken evolved over many years, finally one bird laid the egg that would hatch what we now call a chicken. this egg came before the bird which came out of it, which was the first historical chicken.
of course, if you continue the logical argument then there is in fact no chicken, only a constantly evolving bird-like creature.

The chicken is probally a cross between a goony bird and a seagull, or something like that. The result was an egg that contained what we now call a chicken. Anyway, I hope you get the idea.

If you believe in the Bible . . the it would be the chicken since God created all the animals on the earth. If you don't believe in the Bible .. you still have to ask yourself how the egg got there in the first place ? .. It is easier for me to envision the Chicken being here first. Good luck !

The chicken came first! I agree with the first answer, eggs don't lay themselves. But I believe in evolution and stuff anyways, I don't think the chicken was just created out of nowhere. I'm not saying I don't believe in God, I just think it worked out differently.
