Just saw a question about tipping a hairdresser from a person spending $80 for a haircut. Now, visit to a family doc (without any funcy testing) cost about $100 -$150 if you are uninsured. And a doc usually rents an office, pays his or her staff, buys at least some supplies (somehow similar to a hairdresser). Still, tipping a hairdresser considered very appropriate, almost a must. While tipping doctors is something almost unheard of, and regarded as unethical, maybe even illegal. Of course, an average doc makes way more then an average hairdresser, but a famous hairdresser will sure beat any doctor in this matter. So, what do you thin of that?

Lol... doctors in most countries are not allowed to accept tips for ethical reasons. The same goes with nurses.
Why? Many patients, especially the elderly, are in a vulnerable state of mind during treatment so how can you legimately demonstrate that the patient had a full grasp of what they were doing when they tipped the doctor? You can't. Ethically speaking, doctors are also suppose to treat all their patients equally. It is immoral to place a higher value on one life over another. We call this discrimination. So treating everybody fairly would be very difficult to do if one patient gives them a substantial tip, placing the doctor in the path of a civil lawsuit, if anyone else got to find out about the transaction.

Good question. No surgery other than perhaps some prolonged siamese twins separation can possibly cost $ 100,000 as someone has suggested (typical heart bypass runs $40,000 and that's including all the equipment, all the personnel involved, hospital stay, etc), but still doctors do make enough money. Tipping in this country would be insulting, though if you find yourself travelling anywhere outside the richer countries, tipping may be expected.

No, doctors get enough money. Did you know that one surgery usually runs 100,000 dollars. Why would they need a tip. Also, Doctors figure the price of their staff and bills into how much they charge. Hairdressers get only a small hourly rate, they depend on their tips to survive.

Not usually, although in some countries (I've seen this in Cuba) The hospital has a tipping jar on the counter.

no i won't tip them.. the cost of medical care is outrageous now..i can barely afford to go and that is only when i am deathly sick or hurt...i don't have enough money to pay the bill let alone tip them... if good medical care was provided for all people at reasonably cost..i might think about it then

Doctors make sooo much more than hairdressers, nail techs, waiters and waitresses. So I don't think that you should tip them.

Tipping your doctor is like tipping the owner of a restaurant, you don't do it. Most professional service people doctors, lawyers, bankers, etc aren't tipped.
