My cat has been missing for a few days, but she does this sometimes then comes back.(She is an inside/outside cat. And we live in a very small town. So I don't worry to much when she goes away for a few days.) But she was gone a day or two longer then normal, but I did not really think anything of it. Then this morning I noticed that my neighbors had not taken out their trash yet, and they were not home. So I decided I would take it out for them. They have two cans. One of the cans was much lighter then the other, so I thought maybe I could fit whatever is in the light can in the other one. (You know save them from having to carry back up two cans when they got home.) Well I opened the lighter can, and inside it was my cat! They had run her over, and the worst part is that they did not even tell me!!!

As a fellow cat lover, I'm so sorry to hear that you had to go through this. It would have been difficult but courteous if they had let you know.

Yes I would. As a fellow cat lover, I think that your neighbours were not humane (sorry I don't mean human) to have the nerve to tell you that the cat was hurt or even contact the humane society. This is sickening to hear that they would put the animal in the trash can, I know that they are not animal lovers. They should be punished for doing that. But the government doesnt care. Now you know what kind of people they are. I remember when I was younger and was out with my friend and her mother, she accidentally ran over a car already on the road (was run over before) and I was screaming for her to stop cause I knew the cat and she did and we talked to the owner and the owner felt for the cat and when we went on our way she contacted her vet told him what had happened and after that I believe she had someone take the cat to be buried. That one is burned into my memory banks.
I too live a small village and hate seeing animals that a hurt by being hit by a car on the Hwy close by. I have contacted the proper authourties and they don't seem to care. Too many animals wild and unwild from raccoons, deer to cats have been hurt in our area and all they do is if they are dead throw them into the bushes. How humane is that?
I feel for your loss, and hope in time that the wounds will heal. The neighbours know what they have done and will be punished in their own way, namely unhumane. Big hugs from a fellow cat lover.

I am so sorry about your loss. That is just horrifying that you found your cat in that way. You need to talk to your neighbors, but try not to do so in an accusatory manner; as you do really not know what had happened. Someone else could've hit you cat, and picked it up and put it in the trash can, just because they were upset and didn't know what to do. Someone could've hit it, and your neighbors found it and didn't know who owned it and placed it in the barrel as they did not know who to contact. They may not have been the ones who hit her at all. I am so glad that my four kitties are indoor babies. My original cat was both indoor and outdoor and I worried about her getting hit, but she was smart enough to not cross any streets and would just go to the neighbors yards on either side of our house and watch the birds and play. I have come very close to hitting dogs and cats that are in the road, and it is a frightening experience. I have seen people hit an animal and not even stop...don't know if they didn't notice or if they are just insensitive jerks. I am usually the one that ends up pulled over trying to see if I can help the poor animal or take it to the vet, or figure out where the owner is.... Please talk to your neighbors, I don't think they would've intentionally hit your cat or hurt you by not telling you. Best of luck and I am sorry for your loss.

This is just one of the reasons people are encouraged to keep their cats indoors nowadays. Gone are the days when people thought cats would only be happy if allowed to roam free. Yes, cats really like wandering around outside hunting at night.....but children enjoy playing in the street, as well...that doesn't mean we should allow them to do it. I hope that if you get another cat, you'll keep it inside.
I'm very, very sorry for your loss:( If I lost either of my cats (especially like that), I'd be devastated.
I think you should ask the neighbors about it. Are you absolutely sure they knew it was your cat? There's also the possibility (as someone else stated) that someone else put the cat in their trash can. So don't be confrontational just yet, simply ask them about it.
As far as the original question; I would definitely tell someone if I ran over their cat. It's really wrong not to.

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss. I am an owner of three cats and if this had happened to me, I would be devastated. By all means, I would confront your neighbors. Unfortunately, you will still have to live near them so you can't be rude. Coming from the other side, they might be very worried in telling you what happened and chose to keep it quiet so they would NOT cause friction. You happened to find out by accident, so now their secret is out. I would talk to them, tell them how you feel and at least give them the chance to apologize. Nothing can replace your cat, but it could have just been an unfortunate accident. My heart goes out to you.

Sorry - I disagree with all human beings. perhaps i'm a fowl, yet as quickly as I had executed it and not fessed up top away, i might proceed to maintain my mouth close. The neighbours at the instant are not your father and mom or confessor, and could no longer make the guilt bypass away - you will possibly desire to manage that your self. they are going to continuously ask your self, yet I even have had had cats disappear and mutually as unhappy initially, you recover from it. additionally, that's been 2 weeks already. You did no longer do it on objective, so realistically the only guilt might desire to be which you probably did no longer tell them. it would purely disillusioned them now and harm your relationship, so i might shop quiet and study from it. injuries take place - next time do no longer panic and fess up top away.

Oooh-that's terrible! I would certainly confront them and ask why they didn't tell you.
I witnessed a cat get run over by a car once. It wasn't even my cat. I picked it up off the road and tried to resuscitate it, but it was too late.
At least I had the decency to drive it to the local shelter, once I knew it was too late.
I have a cat, and if that ever happened to me, I'd be furious !

You should explain that you are concerned about your cat because she's been missing for so long. Maybe they found her and threw her out so you wouldn't see her that way. If they don't say anything, leave it alone. What's done is done. Next time, keep your cats indoors. Aside from being run over, there are many diseases that cats can catch being outdoor cats.

If I ran over the neighbor's cat, I would definitely tell them. I would check on the cat and then hopefully get it to a vet to try to save it's life if possible, but if not, I would at least let them know, because I would want to know what had happened to one of my animals if they had died and to be able to bury them.
Is it possible that the neighbors did not run over the cat, but found that your cat had been run over in the street? That might be harder to tell someone, because I would be wondering, if I found the cat run over and it was near the houses, if they might think I ran over the cat.

Wow! That's some story and I am so sorry that you had to lose your cat in this way.
I have never killed a cat with my car. Certainly I would never think of not trying to find the owner and make my apologies if I did.

So sorry to hear that =(
If that had happened to me, I'd definetely tell the neighbors as soon as possible. It is a hard thing to do, but I rather let them know than to have them find out themselves.
