You must be very much in touch with your dog. That is great. I had to take my lab to the vet because he seemed depressed. Every one laughed at me except the vet. He gave him a shot, because he said that sometimes a small virus that is inborn in a dog will rear its ugly head. Anyway I think he might have gotten a B12 shot alo. The next day he was fine. Since you are not thinking about getting another dog, just make sure you continue to coddle and give him special love. I know you hate to get another dog, because sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. Why not try a little kitten? My dog fell in love with the kitten and vice versa. The cat thought he was a dog. The kitten slept in the dogs arms. It was so precious.

I'm sorry to hear about the death of your dog Pongo. I own a Boxer, and I know I will be very sad when she passes on. You don't say how long it has been since Pongo died (?) If this happened recently, then your dog Betsy is going through the grief process, much as people do when they lose a close friend or relative. If she has seemed depressed for a short time, I would give her extra attention .. extra walks, extra petting, and playing. Let her know how special she/he is to you. Betsy may still be sad for a little while .. but after she sees how much you love her and care for her .. hopefully she will soon feel better. If this has been going on for a very long time now .. ( more than 3 months).. I would definitely take her to your Vet. and discuss the difference you see in Betsy. .. They will know what to do to help her. Good luck ! :)

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is very difficult on our whole family when there is a loss. Did your Betsy and Pongo always live together? Animals can grieve and get depressed, just like people do. You may want to see if you have some other friends or neighbors who have dogs that you could spend some social time with so that Betsy could make some new friends. Is there a park or playground near you that you could take her for a walk to? You would meet other people there with their pets, and she could socialize there. Some cities and towns actually have designated dog parks, and you could go there. Check with your vet and see if he/she knows of any places to take her to socialize. Do you have a particular reason for not wanting to get another dog? Is it too soon after Pongo's death? Is it something you may consider for the future, or are you just happy with Betsy by herself? My first "animal family" was a tabby cat named Mineou and a Lab/Husky cross named Astra who we had for 17 wonderful years, and the dog passed away first and the cat basically pined away for her and passed away a month later. She was very depressed, but I was told by several vets, my own and others that I know that because of her age she would not adjust well to a new companion either cat or dog and that time and it would have added to her stress. Now I have an animal family of four kitties (yes I am crazy...but in a good way) Butterscotch and Munchkin (mother and daughter), Grey Baby Bengal, and Lady Katy (named for Kate Hepburn) and one cutie pie Pom named Shelbie. All of the cats were rescued from abuse situations or abandonment, and the dog was my Dad's and of course I had to keep her when he passed away. They are all each others best buddies, and will walk around looking if one of them (the cats) is hiding or shut in the bathroom or something like that. They get very dependent on each other; just like we do with our family and friends. I hope you find some buddies for Betsy, and know that Pongo is in Heaven at the Rainbow Bridge and still knows you love her. Have a good day. I'll say a prayer for both of you.

Take Betsy for walks where there are other humans taking their dogs for walks.

Have fun but be safe.

Show her lots of love and find a dog park to go to frequently. She is missing the dog/ dog interaction. Beagles are pack dogs and miss partners a lot when they are gone. I would also try to find friends that have dogs so you can set up play dates. She will probably be really happy to see and play with other dogs. Good luck and sorry about your other dog.

Yeah , I'd agree with the first poster but there might be a slight chance she might need another k-9 companion . But also if your friends have dogs , ask them to bring the dogs over to play with your dog. That will lift Besty's spirits .

Good questions - take her to dog parks or schedule time for her to just be around other dogs for a while. She may really want another dog because dogs like having companions especially if they've had one for a long time. But if you dont' want to get another dog I would just try to get your dog to interact with other dogs or give her plenty of exercise and praise, good luck!

Play dates with other dogs or let the kids in the nieborhood befriend her shell have alot of human companionship. If all else fails get her to the doggy shrink fast.

Take him out for walks. Dogs like outings.

A pool of cool water relieves depression. Take him to swim.

Time will heal.

My cat lost his brother who died. He meows in a peculiar way whenever he misses his brother. It took him less than a month to resume normal.
